I’m tremendously pleased to distribute to the Pacific Lutheran University community the attached resolution of the Board of Regents, which resolves to achieve pay parity — for faculty, staff, and administration — with peer institutions, over a reasonable and determined period of time. Further, as the resolution points out, we resolve to accomplish pay parity by working together to find cost efficiencies and to develop new sources of revenue, while maintaining access to PLU for students who need financial help to do so, and while properly maintaining our campus in a manner that will enhance teaching, learning, and student living.
This resolution is the result of long, hard work by many, and has been in process since the October 2012 meeting of the Board of Regents. The resolution gained terrific momentum based upon compelling presentations to the Board of Regents by the Faculty Affairs Committee and the Office of Human Resources in January 2013. It is also the result of the hard work of many others, including the members of the Long-Range Planning Committee, whose careful analysis of PLU 2020 determined specific steps the university must take to achieve its vision.
All PLU students, faculty, staff, and administrators will benefit from the ambitious goals set forth in this resolution; but, we’ll only achieve this goal with everyone’s cooperation and input. Over the coming months and years, we’ll provide opportunities and mechanisms for everyone to contribute ideas and expertise regarding efficient use of our resources, and, in the spirit of entrepreneurship, focus their creativity on ways to increase revenue streams for PLU.
Again, this Resolution has long been in the making. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all who gave valuable and constructive input necessary to achieve this landmark resolution. I also thank the Board of Regents for their courage in taking up this difficult, yet necessary, challenge.
