Award Nominations

To nominate an individual or organization for an award, please fill out the related form.

The Student Service Organization Award is awarded to a PLU student service organization that has shown a sustained commitment to serving others in the local community. Selection for this award is based on the following:

  • The student service organization participated in ongoing and sustained commitment to service and community involvement in the current academic year.
  • The organization’s vision reflected the good of the community, using leadership skills to empower others.

The Ron Vignec Community Partner Award goes to an organization with an outstanding commitment to serving our community through sustained partnerships, educating the public, and empowering others to address community concerns and needs.

The David T. Alger Service Award was created in 2009 to honor Reverend Alger for his deep connections with Associated Ministries, Pacific Lutheran University and the Pierce County community. Two individuals will be honored with this exceptional award, one student and one faculty or staff member. Each awardee will have the opportunity to gift award funds to a community organization, agency, or cause in the spirit of continued giving and philanthropy.

Note: Individuals nominated in previous years but have not received the award can be nominated again. Nominations will be reviewed by a committee of faculty, staff, students, and community partners, and the recipients will be announced at the PLU Celebration of Service.


Faye M. Anderson-Van Beek Scholarship for Community/Volunteer Service (Up to three $1,100* awards) is awarded to an outstanding student volunteer (Sophomore or above) that has a good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The Fossness Memorial Leadership Award ($900*) is awarded to a Christian student from Washington (sophomore status) who performs exceptional community service. This student demonstrates leadership in their school, community, or church. Award may be renewable upon application.

The Gladys Mortvedt Voluntary Service Award ($300*) is awarded to a PLU student (preferably with junior status) who has quietly won attention by rendering voluntary service without expectation of recognition or compensation. This award may be for service on or off campus.

How to Apply: Please fill out the Scholarship Application Form. The application includes a 1-page essay (250-350 words) on “How Service and Community Have Influenced Your Life.”

*Please note that the final award amounts may be subject to change for the academic year.

Recipients of the following are not eligible:

  • VA Benefits
  • Act Six
  • PLU Regents Scholars
  • Tuition exchange/remission/ELCA full-tuition benefits from PLU
