Sent to all students on Thursday, May 3 from the Office for Student Engagement & Student Activities Board
Dear PLU Campus Community,
This message is being sent in response to campus conversation regarding LollaPLUza, PLU’s annual music festival. It provides a brief overview of recent communications and our next steps for the event.
Student Engagement sent an message to students on Friday, April 20, to acknowledge that many students expressed disappointment, sadness, and anger that this event’s artist lineup failed to feature the talents, experiences, and cultures of diverse musicians at one of PLU’s largest campus-wide events.
Student Engagement and SAB hosted a forum for all students on Wednesday, April 25th to gather feedback about LollaPLUza. (If you could not attend the forum and/or would like to provide additional insights, we encourage you to share your perspectives through the LollaPLUza Feedback Form.)
Per recommendations from the forum, Student Engagement and SAB formed a LollaPLUza Advisory Committee. The purpose of this committee is for current students to collaboratively advise decisions regarding next steps for LollaPLUza 2018 in partnership with SAB and Student Engagement. The committee comprises approximately 20 students who hold PLU leadership position(s), including positions in ASPLU, RHA, Clubs & Orgs, SAAC, Residential Life and Student Engagement. Committee members are expected to provide representation for their respective student constituents. On Monday April 30, 2018, the Advisory Committee met and advised SAB and Student Engagement to proceed with LollaPLUza with the following event updates.
Updates to the LollaPLUza 2018 Event:
- Retain headliner Sam Lachow but cancel the two supporting artists in favor of adding PLU student bands and performers
- Hire LASR DJs to play a variety of diverse genres and artists in between live performances
- Create student employment positions for additional student support needed to implement the event during the week of May 7-13, 2018
SAB and Student Engagement will move forward with the committee’s recommendations and host LollaPLUza, with all suggested changes, on May 12th. In addition to music, LollaPLUza will include booths hosted by PLU Student Clubs and Organizations, activities (such as a Slip n’ Slide, a rock wall, a foam pit), and food trucks.
Please visit the Student Engagement webpage for updates on LollaPLUza through May 12th.

In the long-term, the Office for Student Engagement and Student Activities Board (SAB) will seek to learn from this community feedback. We commit to proactive, socially just, racially inclusive, and culturally responsive practices that span the entirety of our work.
