Miya Higashiyama is currently a junior vocal performance major at Pacific Lutheran University. A Sammamish native, Miya has grown up and lived in the Pacific Northwest her whole life. She has sung multiple opera roles on the Karen Hille Phillips stage and she is a recipient of the Agnes Berge Smith music scholarship. She also serves on the SOAC (School of Arts and Communication) Student Advisory board at PLU and has sung with the Choir of the West nationally and internationally since her freshman year. This last January Miya was a part of the Joyce DiDonato masterclasses at Carnegie Hall, live streamed on Medici.tv all over the world.
Miya also has a passion for advocating for victims of sexual violence and spreading awareness of the presence of sexual assault on college campuses. She is looking forward to being a part of the program “Sounds of Solidarity” in April on PLU Campus, a public forum for students in which they use artistic expression to encourage discussion of violence in peoples lives. In her free time, Miya enjoys hiking, writing and exploring Seattle.
