Parkland school receives $100,000 from Ellen and Target

"Audun Toven, Pierce County's knight of Norway, has died. Toven, who spent nearly four decades as a professor at Pacific Lutheran University, taught Norwegian culture to thousands of students and community members and was instrumental in developing the Parkland school's Scandinavian Studies program."

Tobacco-free campus begins Feb. 8
The university will become a tobacco-free campus on Feb 8, the first day of spring term. Designated campus smoking areas will be closed. From then through May compliance with the new policy will be voluntary. During that time, free smoking cessation and support programs will be available to those who wish to take advantage of them.

PLU math prof named co-recipient of the Carl B. Allendoerfer Award
Jessica Sklar, associate professor of mathematics at PLU, was named a recipient of the Carl B. Allendoerfer Award from the Mathematical Association of America. She received the honor, along with her co-author Gene Abrams, for the article "The Graph Menagerie: Abstract Algebra and the Mad Veterinarian," Mathematics Magazine (2010).

Pacific Lutheran University was awarded a $75,000 nonprofit security grant to install swipe card access in the Hauge Administration Building. PLU was one of seven local organizations and state agencies that received money from federal homeland security grants.

PLU director of Athletics inducted into WSU Athletic Hall of Fame
Laurie Turner, PLU director of Athletics, was inducted into the Washington State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Turner played basketball for the Cougars from 1976-79. She joins 31 new honorees and five teams this year who join the current 120 member hall of fame.

PLU wins choral performance, conducting awards from The American Prize
The Choir of the West's new CD, "Phoenix" was awarded 2nd place in the college/univ. division of the American Prize competition, and Choral Union's "25th Anniversary Album" won 1st place in the community choir division. Music Professor and Choir of the West conductor Richard Nance also won the American Prize for choral conducting.

Nobel Laureate to present 'Why I became a biochemist'
The PLU Chemistry Department and the Puget Sound section of the American Chemical Society will host a seminar by Nobel Laureate Edmond Fischer at 5 p.m. Friday, May 6 in the Leraas Lecture Hall of the Rieke Science Center. PLU sustainability receives silver rating under STARS
This fall, PLU became the first university to submit data to Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a program of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). PLU received a silver rating.

Long-time Provost Office staff member passes away
Mary Evans, long-time executive secretary for the Office of the Provost, has passed away from a lingering health issue. Her son Alex, a PLU alum of Lakewood, Wash., shared the news recently with close friends of the family. No plans for a memorial service have been announced. Many remember Mary for greeting everyone with a sparkle and for her great sense of humor.
