At the start of the school year, the Pacific Lutheran University community reflected on what it truly means to show up for our students and local communities. Today, that commitment calls us to concrete action.
We are officially kicking off our new advocacy campaign in preparation for the upcoming legislative session. The Washington State Legislature has enacted significant reductions to state financial aid for students attending private, nonprofit universities like PLU:
- Washington College Grant: Reductions are already underway.
- College Bound Scholarship: Major cuts are scheduled to take effect in the 2027–28 academic year.
These state aid reductions hit our most vulnerable scholars the hardest. Nearly 25% of PLU students rely on state aid, and among our College Bound Scholars, 75% are students of color and 76% are first-generation college students.
When the Legislature convenes on January 11, we have a vital window to turn our advocacy into policy change before these cuts fully impact our students in fall 2027. We invite you to stand with us in supporting access to higher education for all PLU students. Stay tuned for additional ways you can lend your voice.
What You Can Do Today
Advocacy starts at the ballot box. One action you can take right now is to make sure you’re registered to vote and plan to cast your ballot on November 3. You can check or update your voter registration details through the Washington Secretary of State Elections Portal.
