Overview

The PLU Board of Regents held its fall meeting virtually October 14-16, 2021.  The Board welcomed new regents Dr. David Coy ’90 (Seattle, WA); Salvador Mungia ’81 (Gig Harbor); and Dr. Sheila Radford-Hill (River Forest, IL).  New advisory members joining are Dr. Erik Hammerstrom as Faculty Secretary; and student representatives Naomi Atnafu, ASPLU Vice President; Cece Chan, ASPLU President; Andre Jones, ASPLU Social Justice Director; Connor Lemma, SAAC President; and Ryan Stracke, RHA Vice President.  Carlos Alvarez, ASPLU Finance Director; Heze Goodwin, RHA President; and Sheridan Moore, ASPLU Public Relations Director were welcomed back for their continued service.

Board Actions

  • Approved the Candidates for Degrees (Undergraduates: August 6, 2021 and Graduates: August 20, 2021).
  • Approved the 2021-2022 Board Committee assignments and Committee leadership.
  • Approved 2022 Summer Sessions undergraduate tuition at $775 per credit regardless of modality, and a technology fee of $70 per student enrollment.
  • Approved graduate tuition rates beginning summer 2022 for individual cohort programs.
  • Established 2022-2023 full-time undergraduate tuition.
  • Approved the setting of tuition and fees for the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program for 2022-2023.
  • Ratified the following administrative appointments: Michael Artime, Chair, Department of Political Science (2021-2022) and Agnes Choi, Chair, Department of Religion (2021-2023).
  • Approved administrator faculty status for Mike Snyder, Director of Athletics and Recreation.
  • Approved the four-college structure pending completion of the Bylaw revision process and organization as prescribed in the Faculty Handbook for implementation by July 1, 2022.
  • Approved the creation of an Emergency Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program, beginning Summer 2022, in the School of Nursing as approved by Faculty Assembly on May 14, 2021.
  • Approved the creation of a minor in STEM Education as approved by Faculty Assembly on May 14, 2021.
  • Approved the creation of a minor in Engineering & Industry, beginning Fall 2022, as approved by Faculty Assembly on October 8, 2021

Key Reports

The Regents heard reports from Dr. Bridget Yaden, Faculty Chair; Mike Frechette, Dean of Enrollment Management & Student Financial Services; Dr. Angie Hambrick, Associate Vice President for Diversity, Justice & Sustainability; and Mike Snyder, Director of Athletics and Recreation.

Committee Activity

Academic Affairs

The committee received an update on the ancillary recommendations resulting from the Faculty Joint Committee process.  Faculty Chair Bridget Yaden and Provost Gregson also provided a report on the process of restructuring the Academic Division.

Budget, Finance, Audit & Compliance

Reviewed and accepted the 2020 403(b) Audit and the 2020-21 Audited Financial Statements. The committee recommended approval of the proposed 2022 summer tuition and graduate tuition rates, the 2022-2023 proposal for undergraduate tuition, as well the 2022-2023 tuition and fees for the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.  The committee also received updates on real property and insurance.

Enrollment & Student Life

The committee heard reports from ASPLU President Cece Chan, RHA President Heze Goodwin, and SAAC President Connor Lemma.  The committee engaged in discussions focused on enrollment, retention, and Critical Race Theory.  Director of Athletics & Wellness Mike Snyder also provide the committee with an update report on Athletics.

University Relations

Committee members received an update on the Voice and Brand project as identified in the PLU Strategic Plan.  Reports were received on donor giving, the landscape of alumni giving, and the Bjug Day of Giving on October 19-20.  The committee also discussed collective impact at PLU.

The next meeting of the Board of Regents will be held February 10-12, 2022.
