Previous Letters
Dear new international students,

We are busy preparing for your arrivals! Are you ready to begin a new adventure in the U.S. and on this beautiful PLU campus? Have you read all issues of Pre-Departure Newsletters? If you missed any of them, please review to launch your new journey smoothly.

Enjoy the summer,
NSO Planning Team

Start Packing

Clothing

Have a wide range of clothing with you to suit Tacoma’s climate, which varies from warm and dry in the summer to cloudy, rainy, and cold in winter. Bring clothes and shoes that you are going to be most comfortable with. Students usually dress casually on-campus.

Summer Clothing

Summer garments such as shorts, sandals, and t-shirts.

Winter Clothing

Winter garments such as winter coat, boots, gloves, hats, and rain gear.

Medication

Medication

Bring with you any required prescription medication or eyewear. Also bring an extra supply of any medicines that you are using at home, and extra set of eyeglasses or contact lenses. Ask for your doctor to provide a copy of prescriptions. If you have any health concerns or medical conditions, bring a copy of medical, dental, immunization records.

Personal Items

Personal Items

To help with homesickness while studying abroad, it is a good idea to bring personal items such as pictures of your family and friends, small gifts, traditional clothes, maps, posters, music, and items that represent you or your culture. These items will also be helpful for you to introduce yourself and your country to people who you meet here in America.

At the International Education Week event in November, international students are encouraged to share their cultures and traditions through demonstrations and performances. So don't forget to bring traditional dresses, musical instruments, recipes, non-perishable food or other items that represent your country or culture.

Before bring food items into the U.S., check these U.S. customs regulations for prohibited or restricted items.

If you have not informed ISS when you are arriving to PLU, please complete the New Student Arrival Form. This is to assure that an International Peer Advisor (IPA) will meet and greet you at the PLU Campus Safety when you arrive to campus. The IPA will also help you move into your residence hall room.
