About...
The Pacific Lutheran University Wind Ensemble is comprised of the some of the best performers of wind and percussion instruments at the University and is recognized as one of the finest groups of its kind in the entire Northwest. Following the philosophy of a player pool, adopting flexible instrumentation according to the composer's intention, the full ensemble of approximately 50 players is soloistic and technically stunning performing chamber music, selected transcriptions, concerti and original full ensemble repertoire spanning five centuries. The Wind Ensemble is committed to championing new music and has performed numerous world premiers each year.
The ensemble performs four concerts on campus per season as well as appearing regularly at local schools, national conferences, festivals and special events.
Under the direction of Dr. Edwin Powell recent highlights have been the ensemble's touring Southern California, critically acclaimed performances at WMEA in Yakima, the College Band Directors Association Conference, and the Music Educators National Conference Northwest Division meeting in Portland, Oregon. During the summer of 2009 the ensemble toured China where it premiered The Monkey King by PLU's own Greg Youtz. In March of 2011, the Wind Ensemble performed the World Premier of a Mercury on the Moon, by the renowned composer Scott McAllister. This innovative new piece is a symphonic song cycle that featured rock n' roll style tenor, Dr. James Brown playing electric guitar.
