Elaine (Benson) Brooks passed away Jan. 2 at her home. She was born in San Francisco on Nov. 23, 1940. She met her husband, Tacoma native Alan Brooks, in chemistry class at PLU in 1959. Her passions included singing, baking, sewing, progressive politics and nursing. She was instrumental in establishing childbirth education in Tacoma and teaching standards for prenatal courses. Elaine spent years supporting immigrants settling in the community arriving from Vietnam, Somalia and elsewhere. She is survived by her husband, three children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
