Theatre Program

Pacific Lutheran University takes great pride in its intimate and challenging Theatre program. We strive to train students in all aspects of theatre art – from acting and directing to technical theatre and design.

In addition to a vigorous course load, we produce three faculty-directed theatre shows, a faculty directed dance concert, as well as student-run productions that include: a fully-realized featured student show, two minimalist theatre productions, an annual musical revue “Night of Musical Theatre”, a one-act festival, a dance team showcase, and various other independent student works throughout the year.

Students are given numerous opportunities to explore each facet of the production process. Graduates of the program boast having tried their hands at acting, directing, building and painting sets, designing and realizing sound and lights, creating costumes, gathering props, working backstage, and stage managing. While each student explores the entire production process, we encourage students to delve deeply into their specific area of interest.

Degree Requirements

Awards available in Acting and Directing, Technical Theatre and Dance.

Fall PlayWe trust students with a great deal of responsibility and leadership in their individual fields. This gives junior and senior level students a challenge while providing first and second-year students with a substantial learning opportunity by working with their more experienced peers.

PLU offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in both Acting/Directing and Design/Technical Theatre. All PLU students are encouraged to participate, however; majors and non-majors alike are welcomed into all components of the process.

Dedicated and approachable faculty, a close-knit and diverse student community, and a deep appreciation and respect for the ever-changing role of theatre in society sets PLU Theatre apart from other programs.
