1936
Gertrude (Brunner) Krause
died on Aug. 19. She was 86. Gertrude was a teacher for 22 years,
teaching in several different Tacoma schools. She was also actively
involved as a member of Luther Memorial and later Emmanuel Lutheran
Church in Tacoma. Gertrude lived in the north end of Tacoma for
57 years. She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Annette
(Krause) Bisset '66; son, Richard Krause '68; and granddaughter,
Coriander (Krause) Hunt '94.
1950
Clarann (Otteson) Wilkins
taught school for 31 years and retired in 1978. She was a kindergarten
teacher at Wainwright Elementary School in the Tacoma School District
for 23 years. Her husband, Ralph, passed away in 1989.
1954
The Flora Lamson
Hewlett Library at Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif.,
recently exhibited a collection of paintings, sculpture, and old
master prints to "Explore the representation of Christ's death
and resurrection from European Renaissance to contemporary America."
The exhibit included an oil of the crucifixion painted by John
Philip (J.P.) Carlstrom (deceased), while a student of Professor
George Roskos at Pacific Lutheran College. J.P. continued his
art studies part-time in Munich while in the U.S. Army. He later
obtained a master in arts degree in art education at Stanford
University, which was followed by further work at the Ruskin School
of Fine Art and Drawing at The Ashmolean, Oxford University. J.P.
died in 1959.
1955
Patricia (Soderman)
Thompson died on Sept. 1. In 1954, before graduating from
PLU, Patricia married her husband of 46 years, Duane Thompson
'55. While Duane attended Luther Theological Seminary in St.
Paul, Minn., Patricia helped support her family. In 1968, she
earned graduate credits in education from Moorhead (Minn.) State
University. This prepared her to return to work to help with her
children's higher education. Patricia is survived by her husband;
her children, Nora '77, Darin '81, Michael, Naomi
'82, and Rachel '83; and four grandchildren.
1956
Marilyn (Krug) Warsinske
retired from nursing at Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake,
Wash. She is doing some traveling, enjoying her family and quilting.
Phyllis (Brandt) Babcock died
on Aug. 21. She taught elementary school for 25 years in Spokane,
Tacoma and Wenatchee, Wash., before retiring in 1993. For the
past 44 years, about every six months, Phyllis received an envelope
with pictures and a letter from each of her friends from the class
of '56: Jan (Geldaker) Reierson, Myrna (Shelver) Heppe, Kathy
(Gulhaugen) Clare, Thelma (Nygaard) Schwarz, Marlys (Solterbeck)
Pfrimmer, Dee (Beck) Carstensen, and Ellen (Henry) Garrity,
who she had lived with on the top floor of Old Main (Harstad Hall).They
called the packet their "round robin." Phyllis is survived by
her husband of 43 years, Ray '59; daughters, Ruth and Carolyn;
son, Steve; four grandchildren; two sisters including Barbara
(Brandt) Coltom '61 and two brothers.
1958
Wesley
Apker agreed to serve as interim executive director of the
California Psychological Association until a new executive director
is named. He will then return to semi-retired status as supportive
husband for his CEO wife, a doting grandfather to his 10 grandkids
and his passion, writing. Wes continues as a part-time faculty
member at California State University, Sacramento in the Department
of Educational Administration and Policy Studies. He is also the
president of Wescat Corp., a management consulting company.
1959
The American Heart Association
held the First American Heart Walk in Memory of Patti Bills,
on Oct. 14, in Medford, Ore. The walk was held during the Medford
Jazz Jubilee weekend, an event that Patti founded and served as
the president for the first 10 years.
1960
George Doebler and
his wife, Nancy, live in Knoxville, Tenn., where George is director
of pastoral care and counseling at the University of Tennessee
Medical Center.
Peter and Karen (Shaner '61) Jordahl
enjoy visiting with their daughter, Miriam, and her husband, Dan,
in eastern Tennessee and with their son, Myron, and his wife,
Terrie, and their family, in Austin, Texas. Peter and Karen remain
active at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Peter uses
an electric scooter to get around as post-polio syndrome has taken
its toll. He continues to be an active radio amateur with call
sign, K5GM. Both Peter and Karen still work full-time.
1961
Carolyn (Ericksen) Swanson
has four grandchildren, three from her son, Keith '89,
and his wife, Clarice '89; and one from her daughter, Karen
'87. Carolyn works in administrative support at the Food and
Drug Administration in Seattle. Her husband, Donald, is retired.
John Wisen died on July 5
as the result of injuries received in an auto accident in January.
He retired from Wenatchee Valley College in 1994 and became a
CFP, working for Personal Investment Management. He is survived
by his wife, Diana.
Bill Lennon was inducted into
the Ocosta High School Hall of Fame in Westport, Wash., on Aug.
5, for coaching football from 1962 to 1966. The 1964 undefeated
Class A football team was chosen as the school's all-time best.
Alan Brooks retired at the
end of the year after 36 years of general dentistry in Tacoma.
He looks forward to enjoying his many interests, weekly grandchild
care and time on Vashon Island.
1962
Gretta Merwin was
elected by school administrators from around the state of Washington
as the president-elect for the Washington Association of School
Administrators (WASA). She will assume office in July 2001. She
has been an administrator in both Washington and Oregon and is
currently the superintendent of the Ellensburg School District.
Gretta received her Ph.D. and master's degree from the University
of Oregon.
Jim Widsteen retired from
his position as assistant superintendent of the Port Angeles (Wash.)
School District in June. Previously he was the director of human
resources for four years. He also served as an assistant principal
at Port Angeles High School, principal of Stevens Middle School
and counselor at Roosevelt Middle School. Jim was a teacher in
the Steilacoom School District for three years before going to
Port Angeles.
1963
Col. John Stevens
retired from the U.S. Army on Aug. 4, after 32 years of duty,
most recently as president of the Oregon Army National Guard Medical
Duty Review Board. He continues private practice of orthopedic
surgery in Salem, Ore.
1964
Dick Nelson is the
new athletic director at Issaquah (Wash.) High School. For 27
years he was at Redmond (Wash.) High School, where he was a physics
teacher and coached boys basketball, girls basketball, football
and baseball. He retired from teaching in 1996 and from coaching
in 1998.
Mary (Griffiths) Wiltse graduated
from Luther Seminary in May 1999 and was ordained in January 2000.
She is now the pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Saint Paul, Minn.
She was previously in nursing education for 30 years.
1967
Nancy (Jurgensen) Pearson
and her husband, Bruce, are enjoying their retirement in their
new home on Hood Canal, north of Poulsbo, Wash.. Their sons are
both in college. Erik is a senior engineering student and Leif
is a sophomore majoring in architecture.
1969
Rick Rouse, Executive
Director for Church Relations and Continuing Education at PLU
received special recognition by the Lutheran Society for Missiology
for his article in Lutheran Partners titled "Technology and a
New Reformation." He was the first place winner in the professional
category of their 2000 annual essay competition.
Catharyn Baird earned a law
degree from the University of Puget Sound School of Law in 1975.
She is currently a professor of business at Regis University where
she has been a faculty member since 1985. Catharyn was named Regis
University (Colo.) Faculty Lecturer of the Year and gave a campus-wide
presentation, "Grumbling in the Desert: Ethics in a Post-Modern
World," on Nov. 3. Catharyn is the daughter of Jeanne Baird
'50 and Theodore Baird '49 (deceased).
Dave Richardt retired after
30 years of teaching drama and English at Rogers High School in
Puyallup. He now lives near Palm Springs, Calif., and teaches
senior humanities and upper school drama at a private college
preparatory school in Rancho Mirage.
Farah (Peters) Fisher received
the Outstanding Professor award from California State University,
Domingo Hills, in May. She is a professor of graduate education.
1970
Charles and Kathy (Harman
'71) Vanderpool's daughter, Ruth '01, represented PLU at the
St. Olaf/Carlton College women's math camp last summer. Ruth was
one of 18 women nationwide chosen to attend the camp.
Sandy (Olsen) Sinnes has a
new position as director of customer service at Olympic Medical
Center in Port Angeles, Wash.
Leroy Sinnes is in his 30th
year of teaching freshman health and coaching basketball. He is
also the director of the physical education department. Leroy
has been coach of the year twice in the past three years as Port
Angeles High School's head coach.
1971
Joe Hustad is serving
on the technical advisory committee in conjunction with the Oregon
Department of Transportation for the complete restoration of the
St. John's suspension bridge in Portland, Ore.. The designated
historical bridge will be completed in 2004.
Carol Cozad was honored as
one of eight recipients nationwide of the 2000 Certificate of
Merit for Outstanding Achievement in the teaching of German. It
was awarded by the American Association of Teachers of German
and the Goethe-Institute of New York.
1972
James and Kim (Lillegard)
Helleson are excited that their daughter, Kirsten Grace, is
a freshman at PLU.
1973
Theresa Tilton and
her husband, Abraham, live in Tacoma, where Theresa continues
to practice law.
1974
Holly Adams retired
from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander. She is now an investigator
for the U.S. Department of Defense in Arlington, Va. Holly and
her husband, Anthony, have two daughters, Leslie, 13, and Lisa,
12. Anthony is a budget analyst.
1975
Jim Yockim is the
director of Bethel Lutheran Foundation in Williston, N.D. Last
summer he vacationed in Washington and Southern Oregon and visited
PLU with his daughters, Jenna, 14 and Ericka, 11.
1977
Curtis Egge is senior
deputy for the Ada County Sheriff's Office in Boise, Idaho.
1978
Cynthia (Jone) Gould
became president of Employees Community Fund of Boeing Puget Sound
in January 2000. The fund is the largest employee owned and operated
charitable giving organization in the world.
1979
Peggy Paugh-Leuzinger
and her husband, Steve, recently accepted the call to serve as
pastors of American Lutheran Church in Baker, Mont.; Peace Lutheran
Church in Plevna, Mont.; and St. Elizabeth Lutheran Church in
Ekalaka, Mont. They have two children, Trevor, 8, and Ethan, 3.
Kelly Henrickson is associate
professor of pediatrics and microbiology at Medical College of
Wisconsin. She has two daughters, Erin, 16, and Kristen, 14.
1980
Gregory Hostetter
and his wife, Jean, announce the birth of Gwendolyn Kai, on July
25. She joins Julie, 2. Greg continues to work for Matson Navigation
Company in San Francisco. He and his family recently moved into
their new home in the Hayward Highlands.
Linda (Keene) Suttie is at
Harvard for one year with her husband, Richard, and their son,
Kyle, 10. They recently returned from London, where they lived
for three years while Richard, a captain in the Navy, was on assignment

Brian Tipple has a new position
as principal/director of research at Sirach Capital Management
in Seattle. He was previously a portfolio manager at the Frank
Russell Company in Tacoma for 13 years. His wife, Traci (Wortley
'82), is a full-time mom for their two girls and an active
volunteer in their hometown of Gig Harbor, Wash.
1981
Becky Babington and
Ron Anderson announce the birth of Bryn Rebecca, on June 20.
She joins Max, 11; Jake, 8; and Sammy, 2.
Roger Mallory and Marita Asheim
were married on Oct. 14 at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle.
Roger is a project manager and systems administrator at Casey
Family Programs. Marita is a teacher at Sunset Elementary School
in Bellevue, Wash.
Carol Haugen recently joined
the Spokane law firm of Paine, Hamblen, Coffin, Brooke & Miller
LLP. Her practice will emphasize commercial and corporate finance
and computer law. She was previously general counsel of Itronix
Corp. Carol earned her law degree from Gonzaga University School
of Law and a diploma in advanced international legal studies from
the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in Salzburg,
Austria.
Rick Mattson and his wife,
Vanita, announce the birth of their second daughter, Orlea Holly,
on Aug. 24. Rick is serving as a lieutenant colonel in the Michigan
Air National Guard. He is commander of the 107 Fighter Squadron,
flying F-16s. As a hobby, he is an American Airlines captain,
flying the S-80. Vanita is enjoying home life but will be returning
to United Airlines as a B-777
first officer in March.
1982
Charles Hoffman
was named to the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting
list by Accounting Today magazine for his work in developing electronic
business reporting language (XBRL). He is chief technology officer
at XBRL Solutions, Inc.
1983
Mike Larson and
his wife, Beco, announce the birth of Charles Edgar Allen, on
July 6. He joins Mack, 2. The proud grandparents are Ed '57
and Betty (Johnson) '58 Larson.
Matthew Johnson accepted a
two-year internship in human resource management with the federal
government in July 1999. He was previously a teacher on military
bases in Japan for nine years. Matt lives in Alexandria, Va.
1984
Tim and Lisa (Miles)
Kittilsby announce the birth of Parker Miles, on Aug. 12.
He joins Eric James, 6.
Carolyn (Crawford) Brooks
and her husband, Ken, announce the birth of James, on Aug. 8.
He joins Jake, 10, and Alec, 6.
Kristi (Larsen) Beebe is a
pastor at Nativity Lutheran Church in Littleton, Colo. She and
her husband, Scott, climbed all of Colorado's 54 "fourteeners,"
mountains that are 14,000 feet and above.
Linda Westpfahl, a school
psychologist, is now working in the Puyallup School District.
She was previously in the White River School District for five
years.

Stacey (Davis) Nelson
and her husband, Grant, announce the birth of Gunnar Davis, on
March 2. He joins Garrett, 2. Stacey is a part-time P.E. teacher
in the Griffin School District in Olympia.

'86, '91) Taupin announce the birth of Emma Claire, on Nov.
4, 1999.

Karen (Quigg) Allyn and her
husband, Gregg, announce the birth of Marisa Kathleen, on Aug.
2. Karen is happy to be staying home with the new addition to

Mark Grambo and his wife,
Gillian, announce the birth of Emily Joy, on Aug. 7. She joins

1986
Kevin Johnson recently
returned to Palouse, Wash., with his wife, Mary Ellen, and their
daughter, Emma, 2. He has a new position at Palouse Surgical Clinic
in Pullman. He is a general surgeon with special emphasis on vascular,
thoracic and laparoscopic surgery. Kevin previously practiced
in Seattle.
Ignacio Delgadillo and his
wife, Michelle, announce the birth of Madilen Anjanette on May
19. She joins Leonard Miguel, 2. Ignacio is the senior product-marketing
engineer at Cypress Semiconductor in Woodinville, Wash.
Patty Hansen and her husband,
Gerry Judd, have two children, Audrey, 5, and Miles, 3. Patty
is a school psychologist in the Fremont (Calif.) Unified School
District and Gerry is a sales representative.
Paul and Laura (Whitworth '87)
Berge announce the birth of Karoline, on Aug. 18. She joins
Nicole, 5, and Michael, 3.
Karan (Olson) Stanford and
her husband, Scott, moved to New Jersey. Karan is the media relations
specialist at Global Communications in New York City and Scott
is an Internet news producer.
Karen Olson recently joined
the Office of the Defense Science Studies group within the Institute
of Defense Analysis.
David and Nancy (Minnitti) Ericksen
continue to reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. They welcomed
Callie Marie on July 22, 1999. She joined Scott, 6 and twins,
Ryan and Jared, 4. David is busy as a partner in a law firm. Nancy
has run in three marathons including the Boston Marathon in 1998.

Carrie Tellefson Miller
and her husband, Frank, announce the birth of Samuel Franklin,
on April 15. Carrie is assistant director of the Washington Department
of Information Services in Olympia.
Tim Rundquist and his wife,
Heather, announce the birth of Rosemary Ingrid, on Aug. 1. Tim
is an attorney for the state of Minnesota.
Laura (Robinson) Long and
her husband, Mark, announce the birth of Nathan Paul, on Sept.
11. He joins Timothy, 2.
Heidi (Geldaker) Wilkerson
and her husband, Jim, announce the birth of Amy Elise, on Aug.

1988
Rod Chiapusio was
promoted to the rank of major in the Air Force Reserve and is
still flying the C-5 Galaxy. He also upgraded to first officer
on the Boeing 777 for United Airlines. He flies out of San Francisco.
Julianne (Larson) Fagerstrom
and her husband, Tom, announce the birth of Erik Thomas, on June
28. The proud grandparents are Ed '57 and Betty (Johnson) '58
Larson.
Amy (Kott) Kennedy and her
husband, Stephen, announce the birth of Adam Richard, on Aug.
24. He joins David, 5, and Jacob, 3. Amy is a dentist in Port
Angeles, Wash.

Margy (Mueller) Schoenheit
is in the graduate teacher education program at Portland (Ore.)
State University. Tim Schoenheit is a product manager at

Dirk and Gena (Wadsworth '89)
Vincent announce the birth of Ethan Vincent, on May 5. He
joins Aaron, 2.
Carrie (Cowles) Dougan and
her husband, Mike, announce the birth of Katie Lynn, on Sept.
26. She joins Sara Ann, 3. Carrie is a fourth-and fifth-grade
teacher in the Meridian School District in Bellingham, Wash.,
and Mike is a sales representative at Diehl Ford.
Ann (Donaldson) Foster and
her husband, Jeff, announce the birth of Maxwell, on July 19.
Ann is a senior operations business manager at Boeing Commercial
Airplane Programs. Jeff is an associate architect at GGLO Architecture
in Seattle. They live on Queen Anne Hill.
Blaise and Karen (Brinkman) Hartman

were married on June 17. Minta is a physical educator and Bryan

Stephanie (Roberts) Wasserman
and her husband, Wyeth, announce the birth of Astrid, on May 21.
She joins Walter, 5. Stephanie is a homemaker.
Wan Ahmad Wan Yusoff and his
wife, Roziah Abu Hassan, have three sons, ages 7, 6, and 1-1/2,
and a daughter, 4. Wan Ahmad is a credit manager at Affin Bank
Berhad in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Lisa-Britt (Tonning) Davies
and her husband, Rick, announce the birth of Jared Nilsen, on
Sept. 11. Lisa-Britt is vice president of account services at
Passage Marketing.
Amy (Lindlief) Marko and her
husband, Gary, announce the birth of twin girls, Madison and Morgan,
on Sept. 6.
Kristi (Carlile) Houle and
her husband, Michael, announce the birth of Madeleine, on Sept.
19. Kristi is an experienced manager at Andersen Consulting and
Michael is a lead engineer at Boeing.

'91) Gardner announce the birth of Nathaniel Grant, born on
Brian's birthday, March 8. Brian is in his 10th year with Enterprise
Rent-a-Car and Leasing. He is a district manager in Portland,
Ore. Kayce is enjoying a year at home with Nate.
Sarah (Jeans) Agsten and her
husband, Mark, announce the birth of Hunter LaRoy, on June 26.
Sarah is a physician at Valley Medical Group in Roseburg, Ore.
Julie (Wilson) Spackman and
her husband, Bob, announce the birth of Isaac Joseph, on April
26. He joins Lillian Joyce, 2.
Kristi Olsen and Norm Smith
were married on July 9 at the Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo, Wash. Kristi's
brother, Pastor Brian Olsen '89, officiated. Heidi Zech
Olivadoti '90, Kristine Giles Lange '91, Beth Canton Nemeth '90
and Lise Hannon Olsen '90 were in the wedding. Kristi is
a principal in the South Kitsap School District and Norm is a
teacher at Olalla (Wash.) Elementary School.
Tracy (Colter) Carpenter and
her husband, Rick, announce the birth of Ashley, on Sept. 8. She
joins Austin, 2. Tracy is an operating room nurse at Good Samaritan
Hospital in Puyallup.
Tina (Banning) Richardson
and her husband, Geoff, announce the birth of Lauren Dana, on
June 20. In September they
moved to Leavenworth, Wash, where Geoff is
a family physician. Tina is taking time off from teaching to stay
at home with Lauren.
Don O'Donnell began a new
position as executive vice president at AXA Advisors in Bellevue,
Wash., in July. Jennifer (Hustad '91) is a stay-at-home
mom with their son, Nicholas Edward, 1.
Marta (Swenson) Costanzo and
her husband, Tom, announce the birth of Nicholas, on April 11.
He joins Anthony, 3. Marta is a registered nurse in labor, delivery
and postpartum care at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. Tom
is in IS technologies at Continental Mills, Inc.
Janeen (Steves) Antonelli
and her husband, Tony live in Houston, Texas. Tony was selected
to NASA's astronaut candidate program, class of 2000. He began
the two-year training program in August, and expects to receive
a mission in five to ten years.
Mike and Joan (Hutchins '89) Friel
announce the birth of Michael Charles, on Aug. 29. He joins Megan,
3. Mike is a computer programmer contracting with COMSYS, and
is currently working with Boeing. Joan still loves being a stay-at-home
mom, and is the newsletter editor for MOMS Club of Renton.
Teresa (Dunley) O'Donnell
and her husband, Brian, announce the birth of Hayley Marie, on
June 24.
1991
Tyler Clement and
his wife, Erin, recently moved with their children; Jacob, 6,
Griffin, 3, and Sydney, 18 months, to Spokane, where Tyler grew
up and Erin went to Gonzaga University. Tyler has a new position
as a financial consultant at Merrill Lynch where he works with

Del Lofton is a Lutheran Brotherhood
district representative in Tacoma. He recently earned the Fraternal
Insurance Counselor (FIC) designation from the National Fraternal
Congress of America. Del also qualified for membership in the
Million-Dollar Round Table, recognized internationally as the
standard of excellence in the life insurance-based financial services
business. Del is affiliated with the Great Northwest Agency in
Seattle.
Ronald Crump has a new position
as communications manager at Intel Corporation's Internet Media
Services in Portland, Ore. He produces sells collateral materials
promoting Intel's streaming media solutions.
Susan Kinoshita and Douglas
Weber were married on Aug. 5 in Seattle.
Ron Wika owns and operates
Maguire & Hester in Vallejo, Calif. He hopes to move back
to Washington some day with his wife,
Amanda, and two daughters, Marina Ann, 4, and Carley Renee,
2.
Jennifer Meyer Brown and her

be leaving for Australia to study for a master's degree in computer

Gomsrud were married on June 17 in Walla Walla, Wash. Stephanie

Brian Riseland left Microsoft
in May for a new position as director of marketing at CheckSpace,
an Internet startup company that is an online payment network
for small businesses.
Lane Kadel and his wife, Candi,
announce the birth of Priya Jennifer, on April 10. Lane began
working at Resource Management Associates, on Aug. 1, as the director
of marketing. He is seeking partnership in the firm. Candi is

Leigh Ann Evanson returned
to the Peace Corps to serve in the Crisis Corp for six months.
She coordinates all non-governmental agencies concerning infectious
diseases and public health education. She was previously in Gabon
for 27 months.

her husband, Goro, live in Kumamoto, Japan. Chizuko is the quality
control system creator at Mitsubishi Electric Kumamoto Semiconductor
Corporation and Goro is a semiconductor engineer.
Brian Aust recently graduated
from Hamline Law School in St. Paul, Minn., and passed the Minnesota
bar exam. He will be practicing immigration law.
Cheryl Green recently graduated
from Harvard psychiatry residency and completed her medical training.
She is now a practicing psychopharmacologist in Seattle. She will

Maria (Parfit) Pederson and
her husband, Jonathan, are living in Wisconsin. Maria serves as
pastor at Cross of Life Lutheran Church in Brookfield, and Jon
serves as pastor at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Mequon.
After two years there, they are enjoying the Milwaukee area, a

Bobbi (Adams) Blankenship
and her husband, Lindy had a daughter, Beth Ann, was born on April
16 with a congenital heart defect. She died on April 17.

promoted to assistant manager of the check services department

In July, Jeff began his third and final year of family practice

Janelle (Smith) Bersch
received a master's degree in social work from the University
of Texas, Arlington, in August 1999. She and her husband, Wayne,
moved to Wenatchee, where Janelle is the director of children's
services at Chelan Douglas Developmental Services. Wayne works
in critical care as a registered nurse at Central Washington Hospital.
They are expecting their first child in January.
Raylene (Mazat) Browne has
a new position as corporate strategic planner and data analyst
at Jewish Hospital Health Care Services in Louisville, Ky.

on June 11. She has a new position as assistant director of international
programs and study abroad coordinator in the office of international
programs at Linfield College.
Rebecca Thompson has been
teaching in the Bethel (Wash.) School District for five years.
She also coaches two sports and is a diversity trainer for the
district. Rebecca received a master's degree from the University
of Washington in 1999.
Noelle (Weber) Harman joined
the Seattle law firm of Hillis Clark Martin & Peterson as
an associate in June. Her practice will emphasize business and
tax law. Noelle was previously a tax associate with the accounting
firm of Deloitte & Touche. Noelle graduated from Gonzaga University
School of Law in 1998.

Scholarship that took her to Germany. She met Axel while teaching

Faculty and
Friends
Emmet Eklund, religion professor emeritus, died on
Aug. 7. He began his 18-year tenure at PLU in 1964 when
he came to serve as the chair of the religion department.
During his time at PLU, Emmet had a deep commitment to teaching
and enriching university life with strong Lutheran values.
Emmet spent 37 years in the ministry and in retirement,
and he and his wife, Marion, co-authored several books about
leaders in the Swedish Lutheran Church. He is survived by
his wife; two children, Kent and Joan; four grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.
Susan (Schillinger) Rouse
’71 passed away on October 8, 2000 after a long battle
with cancer. Wife of Pastor Rick Rouse ’69, Sue had
served the university as a member of the PLU Alumni Board
and was Volunteer Director for Homecoming for two years
running, served as Vice President of the PLU Women’s Organization,
and was a member of the Choral Union.

Fletcher is in his first year at Pacific Lutheran Theological
Seminary, studying for a Master of Divinity degree. Last year,
he and his wife, Natalie Francois, were in Cameroon, West
Africa, with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America division
for global mission. Natalie teaches first-grade at a private international
school in Oakland, Calif. The school serves the Chinese American
immigrant population in Oakland.

Donald Schlottmann plays the
post position on a men's basketball team. He is living in Germany
for the basketball season. Donald is also a youth basketball coach.
1999
Bryce Nelson spent
the summer working as a clerk in the tort claims division of the
Washington State Attorney General's Office. He is in his second

Jessica Robinson and Paul
Henderson were married on June 17 at First Lutheran Church in
Poulsbo, Wash. Jessica is a graduate student and Paul is a special
education teacher in the Central Kitsap School District. They
are making their home in Bremerton, Wash.
Aaron Swenson and Erika Perkins
were married on Aug. 26 in Colville, Wash. Chris Backman '99
and Lesley Hampton '99 were in the wedding. Aaron is in
his second year of dental school at the University of Washington
and Erika completed her student teaching in November. She plans
to teach high school biology.
Denise Thompson is a teleservice
representative for the Social Security Administration in Auburn,
Wash.
Lena Tibbelin and Shaun
Buhre '00 were married on Sept. 2 at the Buhre family beach
house in Home, Wash. PLU religion professor Stewart Govig conducted
the ceremony. Mia Forsberg, Shannon Spahr '02, Cole Willis
and Kevin Hellyer were in the wedding party. Lena works as staff
sports writer for the Eastside Journal and Shaun works for the
Borders store in Puyallup.
Erika Bennett is a teacher
at a parish school in East Los Angeles. She participates in the
ministry of Servant Partners.
Sarah McCoy is teaching second
grade in the Cheyenne Mountain School District in Colorado Springs,
Colo.
2000
Christine (Axley) Albright
is a registered nurse at the University of Washington Medical
Center. She also coaches track at Emerald Ridge High School in
Puyallup. Her husband, Seth Albright '98 is in the master's
in education with initial certification program at PLU. He plans
to teach high school science and coach basketball after graduating
in August 2001.
Laura Ritchie and Geoff Gifford
'01 were married on Aug. 26 at Resurrection Lutheran Church
in Portland, Ore. Laura works in the News and Information Services
office at PLU, and Geoff will graduate from PLU in May.
Mindy Norris teaches third grade
at McAlder Elementary School in the Sumner School District.
Shawn Myers and Melissa Soto
were married on July 8 at Grace Brethren Church in Sunnyside,
Wash. Shawn is a teacher at Toppenish (Wash.) Middle School and
Melissa is a dental hygienist.
Douglas Prindle and Leena
Heaton were married on Aug. 12 at Calvary Presbyterian Church
in Enumclaw, Wash. Douglas is a structural engineer at JRR Engineering
in Edmonds, Wash. Leena is a student at Trinity Lutheran College.
She is majoring in youth and family ministry with a pre-counseling
emphasis.
Heather Wendt is the community
outreach coordinator at Snohomish County Federated Health and
Safety Network.
Matt Crouthamel and Brenda
Fitzer were married in June at Shoreline (Wash.) Community Church.
Matt is a student at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
