Educating for lives of service
Lutheran education values life
in the world. The church’s emphasis on stewardship of the Earth
and on educating for lives of service dictates a practical concern
that looks beyond the university to the needs of local and global
communities. In the Lutheran tradition, all of life is vocation.
People are called upon to live as persons of faith with deeply held
values, and a commitment to service—whatever their chosen profession.
Fully one-third of PLU graduates
enter the helping professions—teaching, nursing, social work,
medicine, parish ministry—often carrying the ethic of service
to the highest levels of achievement. Graduates pursuing careers
outside the service sector continue to devote time to their communities.
This holistic, integrated approach
to education remains the cornerstone of Pacific Lutheran University.
