Services We Provide

Plan B (levonorgesterol), an emergency contraception pill, is available at the PLU Health Center for $20.00. Plan B can be used up to 72 hours after an unprotected sexual encounter. It is not 100 percent effective, but can significantly reduce the risk of pregnancy.

If the Health Center is closed, you can purchase Plan B without a prescription at most retail pharmacies.

We offer counseling on a range of immunizations for general health as well as for study abroad.

We encourage all students to obtain the following immunizations prior to arriving on campus:

1. Hepatitis A (for eligible students)
2. Hepatitis B
3. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
4. Meningococcal (meningitis) – both MenACWY (Menactra, Menveo or MenQuadfi) and MenB (Bexsero or Trumenba)
5. Pneumococcal (pneumonia) (for eligible students)
6. Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TdAP)

The Health Center carries the Tdap vaccine which is available to all undergraduate students at no charge; this is covered by the Wellness Access Plan (WAP). A minor fee is incurred by graduate students because they are not covered by the WAP.

We stock a limited quantity of seasonal flu vaccine when it is available. This vaccine is offered at no charge to students if they are unable to obtain it at their primary care clinics or local pharmacies. We urge everyone to undergo flu vaccination annually.

In addition, we counsel on and write prescriptions for the following vaccines for international travel:

1. Japanese Encephalitis
2. Polio
3. Typhoid
4. Yellow Fever

Laboratory tests, such as blood testing, wound cultures, and other services, are available and will be sent to an off-campus lab. The fees for off-campus lab processing vary depending on the test, but we offer greatly reduced rates. We are happy to provide you with a receipt for any laboratory tests so that you can submit it to your insurance company for reimbursement if applicable. We can also provide you with written orders for lab tests to be completed at local off-campus labs; these will be billed directly to your insurance by the lab. If you are without insurance coverage, we can assist you with applying for the Wellness Access Plan to pay for necessary lab or imaging tests.

We have the ability to conduct certain tests on site at the Health Center. These include rapid screening for strep throat, urinalysis, and electrocardiograms. These services are offered at no charge to to students covered under the Wellness Access Plan, and for a small fee for other students.

We also offer screening for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and Chlamydia at no charge.

The Health Center maintains a safe, sensitive, and confidential environment to discuss any issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identification. All of our providers have received specialized education on the unique needs of transgender, non-binary, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual, and questioning, students.

Information about a student’s health care is always kept strictly confidential.

Prescriptions, medications, and medical supplies are available at the Health Center at additional cost. Call our office at 253.535.7337 for current prices.

We do have self-help/over the counter medicine for colds and flu available on request at no charge. 

CHWS maintains a small supply of prepackaged prescription medications for your convenience. We cannot fill prescriptions from other health care providers. However, if you need to refill a medication that you take routinely, you may schedule an appointment to discuss this with one of our health care providers. If you need something we do not have in stock; the health care providers may write you a prescription or send a prescription electronically to your pharmacy. You may use your insurance card or pay cash for prescriptions filled off-campus. We will provide you with a receipt for any medication we dispense to you. You are then welcome to submit the receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement if applicable. The Wellness Access Plan is also available to assist you with reimbursement for the cost of some off-campus medications/medication copays.

The Health Center does not stock any medications with high abuse potential.

In general, your cost for medications and supplies dispensed from the Health Center is less than those at community suppliers.

Please allow up to 72 hours to process and fill medications at the PLU Health Center.

The Health Center works in close collaboration with the PLU Counseling Center. The two centers work together to find the best places for you to seek care for any mental health concerns you may have. Sometimes this means just taking the time to talk about a specific issue; in other cases, you may require longer-term counseling, medication, or referral to off-campus resources.

In collaboration with the Counseling Center, we offer evaluation and treatment of anxiety, depression and more.

We offer counseling and referrals related to tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse.

The Health and Counseling Centers also make referrals to off-campus mental health providers when the need arises.

The Health Center provides physical examinations for any reason at no charge. This service is provided by appointment. This includes examinations for:

1. Athletics
2. Employment
3. Study Away
4. General wellness (check-ups)

The Health Center provides counseling about sexual health issues in a confidential environment. We are available to discuss and educate about sexual problems or concerns, among other issues, including (but not limited to):

• HIV, gonorrhea, Chlamydia, or syphilis screening (no charge)
• Other sexually transmitted infections
• Pregnancy testing (no charge)
• Birth control counseling and prescriptions
• Cervical cancer screening (pap smears) – recommended for any woman age 21 or older (no charge)
• Irregular or painful menstrual periods and other menstrual problems
• Breast masses or changes
• Vaginal pain or irritation
• Painful intercourse
• Erectile dysfunction
• Scrotal pain or masses
