PLU is committed to providing an environment that provides security for
persons and property without unduly burdensome polices and practices.
No absolute guarantee of individual safety or security of property is
possible, but with the cooperation of students, faculty, staff, and
visitors, it is possible to provide a level of security that is
reasonable, effective, and relatively unobtrusive. All members of the
university community are expected to familiarize themselves with campus
security policies and procedures, adhere to those policies and
procedures, and immediately report violations.
Criminal activity of any kind, even activity that appears suspicious,
is to be reported to Campus Safety in person at Harstad Hall ground
floor room G-28, or by phone at x7441 (535-7441 off-campus). In the
case of an emergency, calls should be made to x7911 (off-campus call 911). The Campus Safety and Information office is always open and
Safety Officers are always available to help you. Reports of criminal
activity on campus should also be reported to the Pierce County
Sheriff’s Department with assistance from Campus Safety. During the
school year a weekly summary of incidents occurring on campus is
printed in the campus newspaper "The Mast."
Pacific Lutheran University places a high priority on the safety and
security of all members of the campus community. As such, it is
university policy to notify members of the campus community of any
reported crime(s) that are determined to pose a threat to the safety of
students or employees. The Vice-President and Dean for Student Life, in
consultation with the Director of Campus Safety, is responsible for
determining the need for and implementing timely campus notification.
Notification will be made as soon as pertinent information is gathered
and confirmed. Means of notification may include campus text message alerts, voice mail,
email, postings, or mailings.
Be a good witness:
If you contact Campus Safety to report a crime, possible crime or concern, please be detailed and specific. Please try to be able to provide detailed information to assist us in providing better service. Our response to a 'suspicious individual' will vary depending on if we are told that the person is standing around as opposed to looking into car windows. A detailed description of a person or vehicle will allow us to quickly identify what you are refering to, as opposed to a general description of 'a man'... this could be almost anyone. Knowing locations on campus and directions such as north, south, east and west will also assist us in tracking situations.
Please don't let a lack of specific information deter you from reporting though! We would rather be called about a situation that turns out to not be a problem as opposed to not being called about something important.
Campus Safety and Information is responsible for the compilation of the
annual crime statistics and publication of this guide as required by
federal law. The crime statistics found on the last page of this guide
represent all crimes known to the Campus Safety administration and
include those crimes reported to other departments on campus. Each year
the Campus Safety Department contacts all departments on campus to whom
reports of crimes may have been made and requests their statistics.
These statistics are carefully compared with Campus Safety reports in
order to ensure no single incident is counted twice.
All crimes on campus should be reported to Campus Safety and
Information. Dial x7441 for non-emergency calls (535-7441 off campus),
and x7911 for emergencies (911 off campus). Reporting crimes to
Campus Safety and Information will make possible the inclusion of those
crimes in the annual disclosure of crime statistics. Such reporting
will also facilitate the timely warning of others on campus should the
situation call for notifying others. Any individual who wishes to
report a crime on a voluntary, confidential basis for inclusion in the
annual disclosure of crime statistics may do so by contacting Campus
Safety.
Pastoral and professional counselors are encouraged, if and when the
counselor deems appropriate, to inform the person they are counseling
of the procedures necessary to report crimes on a voluntary,
confidential basis for inclusion in the annual disclosure of crime
statistics.
