New FAFSA Updates for 2024-25

Greetings PLU Students and Families,

As October 1st approaches, we wanted to make you aware that the 2024–25 FAFSA will not be released until sometime in December 2023. Normally, the FAFSA for the next school year becomes available on October 1st of the current year. However, due to an ongoing overhaul of the FAFSA by the U.S. Department of Education, the release date is being delayed for 2024–25. Once a precise release date is identified, we will notify you.

In the meantime, we will be sending a series of short emails throughout the Fall semester to inform you of the changes you can expect to see once the FAFSA is finally released. The good news is that, for most families, the FAFSA will become a much simpler form to complete. Nevertheless, the structure of the form will be quite different, and some of you might have to answer questions you’ve not had to answer before on the FAFSA. Our upcoming email series will discuss these changes so that you are well prepared to complete the new FAFSA once it is available.

Hello again Students and Families!

If you recall from our first communication, the FAFSA is changing significantly for the 2024-25 academic year, and it will not be available until sometime in December. Some of you may be wondering if the new FAFSA will impact the amount of gift aid you receive. For some families, the new FAFSA will result in additional federal and state grant assistance, but for some families, it will result in less. For those families who qualify for less federal and state grant assistance under the new FAFSA, PLU is committed to maintaining the same total amount of scholarship and grant assistance you received in the previous year provided your financial situation has not changed.

Our next communication will discuss the structure of the new FAFSA and the ways in which the application process will be different.

For your convenience, we have created a webpage where we are housing these communications in case you wish to go back and reread them at any point. We will also use this page to post updates and any new information that we learn along the way.

Si recuerdan nuestra primera comunicación, la FAFSA está cambiando significativamente para el año académico 2024-25, y no estará disponible hasta diciembre. Algunos de ustedes se preguntarán si la nueva FAFSA afectará la cantidad de ayuda que reciben. Para algunas familias, la nueva FAFSA resultará en una ayuda adicional de subvenciones federales y estatales, pero para algunas familias, resultará en menos. As you know by now, the FAFSA is changing significantly for the 2024-25 academic year. Below we describe four major changes to the process you can expect to see when the new FAFSA becomes available for submission.

• The new FAFSA introduces the term contributor, which refers to anyone who is required to provide information on a student’s FAFSA form, including the student, the student’s spouse, a biological or adopted parent, or the parent’s spouse.
• Students and contributors will each need to provide consent to allow the U.S. Department of Education to automatically obtain their federal tax information from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the purpose of calculating federal student aid eligibility. Students and contributors will no longer use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool or manually enter tax information on the FAFSA. IMPORTANT: If a student or contributor does not provide consent, the student will not be eligible for federal student aid. 
• For students with contributors, the FAFSA will be completed and submitted in separate sessions using an invitation system. In the past, the FAFSA was a unified form, where, for example, a student and parents would sit down together and complete the FAFSA in one session. Starting in 2024-25, students will submit and electronically sign their own section of the FAFSA, and if it’s determined that a student’s spouse or parents need to contribute, the contributor will be sent an email invitation. To invite a spouse or parent to contribute, students will need to know their contributor’s legal name, date of birth, and social security number (for contributors without a social security number, students will provide a mailing address instead). Contributors will then need to respond to the email invitation by completing and electronically signing their section of the FAFSA. IMPORTANT: The FAFSA is not complete until the student and all contributors have submitted their respective sections. 
• For 2024-25, students and contributors will continue to electronically sign the FAFSA using an FSA ID and password. If you already have an FSA ID and password, you do not need to apply for a new one. If you need to apply for one, you can do so now using your social security number and mobile phone number or email address. IMPORTANT: Beginning with the 2024-25 FAFSA, contributors without a social security number will also need to apply for an FSA ID and password by providing a response to a knowledge-based question. This process is not yet ready, but we will notify you once it is available.

In the next email communication, we’ll have some updates and information for students whose parents are divorced or separated.

Como ya sabrán, la FAFSA está cambiando significativamente para el año académico 2024-25. A continuación describimos cuatro cambios importantes en el proceso que pueden esperar ver cuando la nueva FAFSA esté disponible para su presentación.

• La nueva FAFSA introduce el término contribuyente, que se refiere a cualquier persona que deba proporcionar información en el formulario FAFSA de un estudiante, incluido el estudiante, el/la esposo/a del estudiante, un padre biológico o adoptivo, o el/la esposo/a del padre.

En el pasado, la FAFSA era un formulario unificado, donde, por ejemplo, un estudiante y sus padres se sentaban juntos y completaban la FAFSA en una sola sesión. A partir de 2024-25, los estudiantes presentarán y firmarán electrónicamente su propia sección de la FAFSA, y si se determina que el/la esposo/a o los padres de un estudiante necesitan contribuir, se enviará al contribuyente una invitación por correo electrónico. Hello Students and Families,

As we said in our second email communication, the new FAFSA will result in additional federal and state grant assistance for many families, but for other families, it will result in less. Here are the factors on the new FAFSA that will impact your federal and state aid eligibility:

• The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is being replaced with the Student Aid Index (SAI). This new formula allows a minimum SAI of -1500 and implements separate eligibility determination criteria for Federal Pell Grants. Furthermore, access to the Federal Pell Grant is being expanded to more students by linking it to family size and federal poverty guidelines.

• Household size will now be called family size, and this number will be determined by the number of exemptions reported on parental tax returns (for a dependent student). The larger the family size, the greater the chance of qualifying for the Federal Pell Grant.

• The new Student Aid Index (SAI) will no longer use the number of students in college in the eligibility formula. For students with siblings in college, they may qualify for less federal and state grant assistance under the new FAFSA.

• For students whose parents are divorced or separated, the guidance pertaining to which parent completes the FAFSA has changed. In the past, the parent who completed the FAFSA was the parent with whom the student lived the most over the previous twelve calendar months. Beginning with the 2024-25 FAFSA, the parent who provides the most financial support is the parent who will complete the FAFSA.

• The net worth of a business or farm will no longer be excluded for families with fewer than 100 full-time employees. Applicants will be asked to report the net worth of all businesses, regardless of the size of the business.
  • IMPORTANT: If you are a small business owner, you might want to talk with your tax accountant in advance of completing the FAFSA if you are unsure of your business’s net worth.

*Update: For parents without a social security number who need to apply for an FSA ID and password, the Department of Education is working on a process, and it will be made available when the new FAFSA comes out in late December 2023.

Unless new information arises, this communication will be our last until December when we can finally announce when the 2024-24 FAFSA will be available.

Estos son los factores de la nueva FAFSA que afectarán su elegibilidad para recibir ayuda federal y estatal:

• La Contribución Familiar Esperada (EFC) está siendo reemplazada por el Índice de Ayuda Estudiantil (SAI). As we approach the holiday break, we wanted to make you aware of the most updated information regarding the 2024-25 FAFSA. Although you might be able to submit the FAFSA by December 31st, be aware that colleges and universities – including PLU – will not have access to the 2024-25 FAFSAs of their students until January 31st. As a result, financial aid awards for 2024-25 might not be available for viewing on Banner until later than normal. Once we have a clearer timeline, we will send another communication.

Hello Students and Families,

As you may already know, the 2024-25 FAFSA is now available for submission. The form launched quietly on December 30th, and for a couple of weeks, it was only available intermittently. While the form is now live 24/7, there are still a number of issues that are making it difficult for some students and families to complete the application. Most notably, parents without social security numbers are unable to apply for an FSA ID or password, which means they cannot yet access the parent portion of the FAFSA.

If you and all contributors have successfully completed and submitted the form, congratulations! If you have not yet submitted the form, you are welcome to wait several more weeks until the issues impacting the FAFSA have been resolved. Submitting the form later in February will not jeopardize the amount of financial aid for which you qualify. Furthermore, the Department of Education just announced that they will not begin sending FAFSA applicant data to colleges until the middle of March. In other words, you still have plenty of time.

If you wish to complete and submit the form sooner and would like assistance, we will be hosting a number of FAFSA completion workshops throughout February for current students and families in the Anderson University Center (AUC). Be on the lookout for an email next week with dates and times.

Once we begin receiving FAFSAs and have a clearer idea about when 2024-25 financial aid awards will be available for viewing in Banner, we will send a follow up communication.

Hello Students and Families,

In our last email communication from February 1st, we mentioned that the Department of Education would start sending FAFSA applicant data to colleges by the middle of March. As the middle of March has arrived, we wanted to send another communication to share what we know so far:

• Earlier this week, the Department of Education began sending a very small number of FAFSAs to a handful of schools nationwide to test the FAFSA transmission process. Over time, they will begin sending an increasing number of FAFSAs to an increasing number of schools, a process that’s being called a “ramp up” to a normal FAFSA delivery level. At this point, we don’t know how long the “ramp-up” phase will last, but we can share that PLU has received a handful of 2024-25 FAFSAs. Once we receive your individual FAFSA, you will receive an acknowledgement email from us at your PLU email address and any other student email address listed on your FAFSA to notify you that we have received your 2024-25 FAFSA. We will not begin sending these acknowledgement emails until later this month. And until we know more about the length of the “ramp up” phase, we still cannot say with certainty when current students will begin receiving their 2024-25 financial aid awards. Once we have a firmer timeline in place, we will send another communication.
• The Department of Education also promised that parents without social security numbers would be able to apply for an FSA ID and password by the middle of March. As of today, the process is partially working. Parents without an SSN can now access the FAFSA, but they have to manually enter all of their financial information. Furthermore, when a student invites a parent to contribute to the FAFSA, the information the student enters must exactly match the information the parent provided on studentaid.gov when applying for an FSA ID and password.
• If you and your contributors already submitted your FAFSA but you need to make updates or corrections, you will be able to do so in “late March” according to the Department of Education. Unfortunately, we do not have a precise date when corrections access will become available.

We know that many of you are anxious due to the delays caused by the Department of Education. A couple of things to remember:

• For undergraduate students on our Parkland campus, tuition is fixed at $49,472. You can find 2024-25 cost of attendance information here.
• In our second email communication sent on October 16th, we said that for those families who qualify for less federal and state grant assistance under the new FAFSA, PLU is committed to maintaining the same total amount of scholarship and grant assistance you received in the previous year provided your financial situation has not changed.

If you have not already done so, we would urge you to submit your 2024-25 FAFSA now. Many students and families have reported to us that the application process – when it works well – has been much faster than previous years.

Finally, we plan to hold some more FAFSA and WASFA workshops on campus in April for students and families that would like some in-person assistance. Once those dates are finalized, we will let you know.

En nuestra última comunicación por correo electrónico del 1 de febrero, mencionamos que el Departamento de Educación comenzaría a enviar los datos de los solicitantes de FAFSA a las universidades a mediados de marzo. Como ya ha llegado la mitad de marzo, quisiéramos enviar otra comunicación para compartir lo que sabemos hasta ahora:

Hello Students and Families,

As we approach the end of the Spring semester, we wanted to provide an update regarding when you can expect to receive your 2024-25 financial aid awards. We have been receiving 2024-25 FAFSAs from the Department of Education for several weeks, and many of you have received an email from Student Financial Services acknowledging that your FAFSA has been received.

Graduate students and ABSN students enrolled in the Summer term who have submitted a 2024-25 FAFSA can expect to receive their financial aid awards in mid to late May, prior to the start of classes.

Undergraduate students on the Parkland campus who have submitted a 2024-25 FAFSA can expect to receive their financial aid awards by the end of June. Because financial aid awards for undergraduates on the Parkland campus will be so much later than usual, we will be sending a paper copy of the award to your permanent address, something we only do for incoming students. You will also receive an email when your award is ready for viewing on Banner.

If we have a question about your FAFSA or need you to make a correction, we will contact you directly via email at your PLU email address. Corrections access is now available for the 2024-25 FAFSA. If we are contacting you about your FAFSA, it means that you will not receive a financial aid award until the question or correction is addressed. Be on the lookout for any emails from our office, and please respond promptly in order to receive your financial aid in a timely manner.

With only several weeks until the end of the semester, we will not be able to host any additional FAFSA workshops this year. However, if you need assistance completing the FAFSA, you are welcome to come to our office during normal business hours to meet with someone. We know that FAFSA submission continues to be challenging for students whose parents do not have a social security number, so we urge you to reach out to us with any questions.

A medida que nos acercamos al final del semestre de primavera, queríamos brindarle una actualización sobre cuándo puede esperar recibir sus asignaciones de ayuda financiera para 2024-25. Hemos estado recibiendo FAFSA 2024-25 del Departamento de Educación durante varias semanas y muchos de ustedes han recibido un correo electrónico de Servicios Financieros para Estudiantes confirmando que se recibió su FAFSA.
