The Art of the Book

Typesetting 030 (1)The Art of the Book I is a studio art course in the historical, aesthetic, and creative dimensions of book design and typography. The class is conducted in PLU’s own Elliott Press. Students gain hands-on experience in the enduring handcrafts of typesetting, letterpress printing, and bookbinding.

Advanced students may go on to write or edit, design, illustrate, print, and bind their own limited edition books in an independent study course, Art of the Book II. Advanced students often T.A. for Art of the Book I courses and have the opportunity to assist in the Elliott Press with commissioned projects that are brought to the Press.

This course is offered annually, usually in Spring semester.
