Financial Aid & Scholarships

The PLU Department of Kinesiology has many scholarship and financial aid awards available.  Applicants who want to be considered for scholarship should indicate on the admission application. No separate application is needed.

Graduate Assistantships are also available for admitted students.

Applicants can also look for federal financial aid for graduate students, military aid, or external scholarships.

Scholarship Types:

Build Your Career Scholarship

Amount: $5,000

Eligibility: Any applicants who apply for admission to Master of Science in Kinesiology by March 14, 2023 to start the program in Summer 2023.

Terms of the Award: The award will be distributed over the course of the degree program, based on the number of credits registered for each term.

Faculty Excellence in Kinesiology Scholarship

Award amount: Up to $7,500
Number of awards: One

Criteria:

  • At least 16 previous credits of course work in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or Physical Education.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.4

Notes: Scholarship is given for a 1 year period only. Recipient must be a full-time student in the MS Kinesiology degree to receive award. For students who select the 2-year option, the scholarship is non-renewable for the second year.


Emerging Leader in Kinesiology Scholarship

Award amount: Up to $5,000
Number of awards: two

Criteria:

  • A GPA of 3.25 or higher
  • Evidence of leadership experience or potential as demonstrated in the program application. Consideration is given to previous work (paid or volunteer), previous leadership positions held, and personal or professional vision as expressed in the application letter. An interview may be required as part of the scholarship application process.

Notes: Scholarship is given for a 1 year period only. Recipient must be a full-time student in the MS Kinesiology degree to receive award. For students who select the 2-year option, the scholarship is non-renewable for the second year.


Kinesiology Achievement Scholarship

Award amount: $1,000-$3,000
Number of awards: as funding permits

Criteria:

  • Admission to the MS in Kinesiology program
  • Evidence of financial need and potential academic or professional promise.

Scholarship Application Deadline:

Submit your admission application by January 17 to receive priority consideration for scholarship. No separate scholarship application is needed. Applicants who submit their application by March 14 will be reviewed as funds are available.

Notes: For students who select the 2-year option, the scholarship is non-renewable for the second year.

The graduate assistantship program offers graduate students an opportunity to participate in academic and administrative activities that will enhance their graduate education experience, as well as provide financial assistance.

A limited number of assistantships are available during the academic year. In general, assistantship awards are for interactions and opportunities involving time commitments between five to twelve hours per week. Students receive payment based on their hourly work as student employees.

Assistantships are considered taxable income.

Award amount: Awards vary depending on hours worked. Amounts typically vary between $1,750 – $4,200 per semester.

Eligibility: To be eligible for a graduate assistantship, an applicant must be:

  • admitted to the MS Kinesiology program
  • maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 graduate grade point average and
  • enrolled full or part-time during the semester/term of the assistantship

Criteria
Criteria for awarding assistantships may include any combination of the following: (a) skills and abilities (b) academic merit (c) potential for success, and (d) contribution to the mission of the Department of Kinesiology and University. In addition to the assistantship application, information in the applicant’s admission file may be assessed.

How to Apply: Submit the Graduate Assistantship Application to apply. Please note that you should have accepted the admission offer before submitting the application. Final deadline to apply is Friday, June 30, 2023. 

The PLU Grant provides a 10 percent discount on tuition for graduate applicants who graduated from PLU with a bachelor’s degree or higher and enroll in a PLU graduate-level degree or approved master’s level certificate program. Restrictions apply to those students who are also PLU employees. The discount begins immediately upon admission.
