Our Clinical Experiences
Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
- Students complete ~120 clinical hours per term
- Placements vary by level:
- Early rotations: Foundational skill-building and supervised patient care
- Final rotations: Increased independence and full-scope clinical reasoning
👉 All students complete robust, in-person physical assessment training prior to entering clinical settings to ensure strong foundational skills.

Who Can Precept?
All preceptors must have an active, unencumbered license and at least one year of clinical experience in their role.
FNP Preceptors
- FNPs, CNMs, MDs/DOs, PAs
Approved Settings
- Primary care (family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, women’s health)
- Community care (rural health, urgent care)
- Select specialties
PMHNP Preceptors
- Psychiatric NPs, MD, DO, CNS-Psych
- LICSWs and LMFTs
- Outpatient psychiatry
- Integrated behavioral health
- School-based mental health
- Inpatient psychiatry
Preceptor Requirements & Expectations
Preceptors are supported by PLU faculty and play a key role in student learning.
Requirements
- A current affiliation agreement/contract must be in place with PLU
- May precept no more than two students at a time (per Washington State regulations)
- Maintain active, unencumbered licensure
- Complete orientation to course and role expectations
What Preceptors Can Expect
- Clear course objectives and student expectations for each rotation
- Access to program curriculum and outcomes
- Ongoing communication with a dedicated clinical faculty member
- Faculty-led:
- Initial introduction at the start of the term
- Site visit (virtual or in-person as appropriate)
- Final check-in and evaluation
Students are supervised and evaluated in partnership with faculty, who maintain overall responsibility for grading and progression.

Washington State Preceptor Grant
Washington nurse preceptors may be eligible for the Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant:
- Approximately $500–$1,000 per student
- Requires 80+ clinical hours per student
- Available for multiple rotations per year (based on funding)
