Open Lab Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Goggles,  a lab coat, and appropriate shoes are required for open lab work. The use of lab coats in other labs is at the direction of the lab supervisor.

Eye Protection: Goggles

The stockroom sells approved goggles for PLU lab use where they have impact resistance and splash protection via indirect venting and a seal to the skin. Below are examples of good and bad examples of eye protection including both type of eye protection and use.

Good Examples
Goggles on right 2
Goggle follows the three criteria and are being worn correctly.
Goggles on right 1
Goggle follows the three criteria and are being worn correctly.
Bad Examples
Goggles on wrong 2
This eye protection example only has impact protection and no splash guard nor indirect venting.
Goggles on wrong 1
Good goggles but incorrect use. Very protected forehead but those poor eyes.
Foot Protection: Shoes that cover your feet

Shoes that cover your entire foot must be worn at all times with a good sole. No open toes, heels, or other exposed areas.

Good Examples

Covers entire foot and has a good sole.
ok_shoe2 to wear
Covers entire foot and has a good sole.
ok_shoe3 to wear
Covers entire foot and has a good sole.
Bad Examples
wrong_shoe to wear
It may cover the entire foot but doesn't have an appropriate sole.
wrong_shoe2 to wear
It doesn't cover the entire foot but does have a good sole.
socks don't count
Nope, socks don't count!
Skin Protection: Laboratory Coat

A white lab coat (initially) must be worn in the Open Lab at all times and elsewhere at the department’s discretion.

Good Example

Lab coat has a proper length, color, and is being worn correctly.
Bad Example
labcoat_wrong1 to wear
This lab coat is not protecting the student.
