Morken Madness: March 9th - 13th

Join us the week of March 9 – 13th as the Mathematics, Computer Science, and Data Science departments host special events in celebration of their disciplines. All of the PLU community is invited to attend and participate!

Schedule of Events

Monday, March 9th
11:30am-12:15pm

  • Kick off Morken Madness with snacks courtesy of the Computer Science Department. Meet outside Morken 203.
  • Computer Science Post-it Pixel Project, wall outside of Morken 203.
    • Help us create an image with post-it pixels! The corkboard wall outside of Morken 203 is the canvas for a giant neon image composed of post-its. It only takes a couple moments to stick the post-its on paper and affix the paper to wall. Anyone can participate and the project will be going on the entire week of Morken Madness. Piece by piece, we’ll see the picture emerge!
  • Charty Party PLUza starts – Your challenge: transform data into a creative, original, and compelling visual story. Scroll to the bottom of the page for more details.
  • Estimation Jars Challenge begins – Take your best guess at how many candies are in each jar. The closest estimate wins! No counting, no shaking…just pure estimation skills. Scroll to the bottom of the page for more details.
  • Search Morken each day this week to find a pair of hidden math or computer science socks and 3D printed treasures. Finders keepers!

Tuesday, March 10th
7-8pm in Morken 233 (the ERB)

  • Take part in a Cribbage Crash Course (with Cocoa!) hosted by Cameron Robinette. Now’s your chance to learn this classic card game! Seasoned players are welcome to join the fun and help new players. This crash course will teach you all the basics–you’ll be playing confidently in no time. Is Cameron qualified? Probably. Her grandmother has been schooling her for years.
  • Don’t forget to scour Morken for the hidden math or computer science socks and 3D printed goodies!

Wednesday, March 11th
11:30am-12:15pm in Morken 233 (the ERB)

  • Drop by the Math Meet-Up for coffee, doughnuts, and fruit courtesy of the Mathematics Department.
  • Join math majors and faculty outside of Morken 233 for a Set tournament. All levels of skill are welcome, and the Math Club is happy to teach you to play.
  • Search Morken to find a pair of hidden math or computer science socks and 3D printed treasures!

Thursday, March 12th
Morken 214

  • Attend the Computer Science Tech Talk: “AI Risk, Evaluation, and Governance” with guest speaker Colin Shea-Blymyer, a Research Fellow at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET). Meet in Morken 214 from 2-3:30pm or join virtually here. All are welcome to join us!
  • Estimation Jar Competition and Charty Party PLUza entries are due by noon.
  • Search Morken to find Thursday’s pair of hidden math or computer science socks and 3D printed treasures. Finders keepers!

Friday, March 13th
11:30am-12:15pm in Morken

  • Post-it Mural Photo Session, outside of Morken 203. Take a picture in front of the finished post-it mural!
  • Hunt down the last pair of math or computer science socks and 3D printed treasures hidden in Morken.

11:30am-12:15pm in the Rieke Lobby

  • Pies for Pi Day!
    • Drop by the Rieke 1st floor lobby where the Math Club will be serving up free slices of pie in celebration of Pi Day, working on their Pi chain, and giving away Pi bracelets. (While supplies last.)
  • Winners for the Estimation Jar Competition and the Charty Party PLUza will be announced at 12pm by the Math Department.
  • Visit the Ostenson Museum in Rieke 123

1:30-2:30pm in Morken

  • Pi a Professor Day!
    • The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is hosting a fundraising event for their club that gives students a chance to toss shaving or whipped cream pies into the faces of a few Natural Sciences professors. It’s $2.00 a throw. No limit on how many pies per person. Bonus: If the professor’s department has a student club, half of the total of the pie tickets sold for that professor will be given to that club. (Example: A chemistry professor who was hit with $40 worth of pie would raise $20 for the PLU Chem Club.)

Activity Instructions

POST-IT PIXEL PROJECT

This Computer Science-sponsored project uses post-it “pixels” arranged in a specific pattern to create a PLU-themed wall mural. The giant neon design was created by PLU professor Alex Bacula and  will cover the wall outside of Morken 203. We’d love to have your help building it! Printed instructions and supplies can be found on a table outside of Morken 203 during the entire week of Morken Madness. All members of the PLU community are welcome to drop by at any time and assemble a part of the image.

There will be lots of post-its to put up (1,980 to be exact), so we need all hands on deck! Not only is this a great opportunity to learn how pixels are used in computer images, but it’s also a chance to be part of creating a public art project in Morken. See the final image on the last day of Morken Madness week: Friday, March 13th!

CHARTY PARTY PLUZA

We’re launching a graph competition inspired by Charty Party and Dear Data! Your challenge: transform data into a creative, original, and compelling visual story. Think beyond standard charts — experiment with form, style, and narrative. Whether playful, artistic, minimalist, or bold, your goal is to make data informative, visually engaging, and possibly hysterical! Two prompts are available, choose one (or both), whichever suits your fancy.

Submissions are due Thursday, March 12th at 12:00pm. Full details, prompts, and submission guidelines can be found within this Google Form

Winning submissions in each category to be announced Friday, March 13th at 12pm in the Rieke Lobby. Certificates and prizes to be awarded during our monthly Math Meet-Up event on Friday, April 10th in Morken 233 from 11:30am-12:15pm.

ESTIMATION JARS COMPETITION

We’re hosting an estimation jar competition! Take your best guess at how many candies are in each jar—closest estimate wins. No counting, no shaking… just pure estimation skills. Use your mathematical minds to make it count. Tie breaker for guessing the number of candies of a specific color. Each winner gets to keep the contents of the jar–that’s a lot of sugar.  Find the jars on the window ledge in the ERB (Morken 233).
