Weather Related Campus Closure Procedures
When stormy weather creates hazardous travel conditions, university students and employees are urged to use caution when traveling.
Closure Decision and Timing
- A determination will be announced by 6 a.m. for morning and afternoon classes/activities.
- A determination will be announced by 1 p.m. for evening classes and activities.
- Classes may be canceled and/or the university may be closed or have a delayed start.
How to Check for a Closure
Closure information will be communicated through several channels:
- PLU Alert! System: A Community Safety Information notice will be sent via email and text message to students and employees. This notice will include which campuses are affected.
- PLU Homepage: The university homepage will be updated: www.plu.edu
- Campus Closure Hotline: Call 877-322-0872 for the status of PLU’s hours of operation.
Local Media: Notice will be given to local television and radio stations. Information for most K-12 and colleges can also be found online at www.flashalert.net
ABSN Program in Lynnwood, WA
- Announcements will specify when the Lynnwood location is closed.
- Weather and snow accumulation can differ greatly north of Seattle, so the Lynnwood Nursing Center/ABSN location may remain open or close differently than the main campus.
- If you are a student or employee in the ABSN program, look for language specifically naming the Lynnwood Nursing Center/ABSN.
Faculty Communication Procedures
In the event of a cancellation, closure, or late start, faculty are responsible for communicating with students as soon as possible:
- Inform students of the closure by email or Sakai message.
- When possible, inform students in advance of the closure about which mode of communication you will use.
- Inform students how (and how often) you will communicate in the event of continued closures (e.g., with syllabus updates, assignment modifications).
Emergency Safety and Travel Tips (All)
- Exercise extreme caution while walking from parking lots, transit locations, and on pathways.
- Footwear: Wearing non-slip, rubber-sole footwear is recommended until you arrive at your destination.
- Walking Safety: Walk on grass instead of sidewalks or roadways if they are icy.
- Snow/Ice Clearing: Facilities Management concentrates clearing efforts on the interior pathways of campus first. Parking lots are addressed only after other areas are clear and safe.
Emergency Preparedness and Housing
- Emergency Kits: All faculty, staff, and student commuters are encouraged to keep emergency kits in their vehicles (including a sleeping bag and overnight bag). A flashlight and other supplies should also be kept in your residence hall room or office.
- Temporary Housing: Commuter students or employees needing temporary housing during hazardous weather may contact Campus Safety at 253-535-7441.
- Students will be offered a temporary stay in an empty residence hall room or lounge, but you will need to supply your own bedding.
