Sixth Annual Powell-Heller Conference for Holocaust Education: March 13-15, 2013, Anderson University Center

Scholar Deborah Lipstadt; Author Cara De Silva; PLU Dean of the School of Arts and Communication and pianist Dr. Cameron Bennett; PLU professor and art historian Heather Mathews and others join to present “Empowerment” a three-day conference. The Powell-Heller Conference seeks to give educators, students and community members a way to use the lessons of the Holocaust to empower themselves and those around them. Peter Altmann

Peter Altmann, a longtime Tacoma resident, will present a special viewing of the film “Adele’s Wish.” This one-hour film tells the story of Peter Altmann’s mother, Maria. A Holocaust survivor, Maria Altmann recently fought all the way to the Supreme Court to return five famous paintings of Gustav Klimt to her family, including the famed $135 million Klimt “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer.” Peter Altmann will talk on his journey of empowerment and perseverance.

Brown Bag Lecture: October 16, 2012, noon to 1 p.m., Anderson University Center, Chris Knutzen Hall

Edwin Black, author of “IBM and the Holocaust”

Black will discuss the stunning story of IBM’s strategic alliance with Nazi Germany. As the Third Reich embarked upon its plan of conquest and genocide, IBM and its subsidiaries helped create technologies to track the “final solution.”
