Meet the Class of 2029: Reformers

Pacific Lutheran University is set to welcome the Class of 2029, a dynamic group of students ready to make an impact. This is a cohort of Reformers: students who are ready to turn passion into purpose, and purpose into action.
One of them, incoming freshman Ryan Meas, says the sense of connection and possibility at PLU stood out immediately. “I felt so welcomed for the first time in a long time. PLU feels connected to the core. During a campus visit, I learned about such a wide array of opportunities to explore academically. I know that I’m in a place that can help me build my future.”
For the third year in a row, PLU is celebrating enrollment growth — a rare achievement at a time when many similar institutions are facing enrollment challenges. This momentum affirms that PLU’s distinctive approach, grounded in care, belonging, and purpose, is resonating with students and families.
This year, PLU received a record-breaking 5,300 first-year applications. The 602 first-year and 107 transfer students joining PLU this fall reflect broad geographic, cultural, and academic diversity, bringing fresh energy and perspectives to campus. Their diversity strengthens and reflects PLU’s mission.

This list reflects both national trends and PLU’s distinctive strengths — especially in fields that combine hands-on learning with meaningful career outcomes. From healthcare to business, students are choosing majors that allow them to make an impact in their communities and beyond. Many cited PLU’s reputation as the reason for choosing programs like nursing, kinesiology, and music education.
Rising interest in computer science and engineering underscores PLU’s strength in offering STEM programs that equip students with the skills needed for today’s fast-growing career fields.
Bringing in students from across the country — and the world
This year’s class hails from 16 states and 15 countries, with students traveling from as far as Norway, Nepal, Ethiopia, and Australia to attend PLU.
What drew these students to PLU?
Students and families note a range of reasons for choosing PLU. Many cite financial aid offers, academic fit, and personalized support from admission counselors. Others point to standout experiences like campus visits, as well as interactions with coaches and faculty. Incoming student Stacey Smalls shares, “I was drawn to the smaller community and smaller class sizes, as well as the study abroad opportunities. The fixed tuition guarantee was also a good motivator.”
A new Lute parent notes, “The campus visit sealed the deal. A beautiful space with a diverse community and friendly atmosphere.”
Lutes open doors: PLU’s commitment to access and affordability
This year’s incoming class demonstrates the continued impact of PLU’s efforts to increase access to higher education. Programs like the Automatic Admission Partnership (now serving over 150 Washington high schools) and the 253 PLU Bound Scholarship are not only expanding opportunity, they’re transforming futures. In this incoming class, 38% received the 253 PLU Bound full-tuition scholarship and 20% were admitted through PLU’s Automatic Admission Partnership.
“We’re seeing the results of long-term investments in affordability, access, and student-centered support,” said Melody Ferguson, Dean of Admission. “These students aren’t just coming to PLU because we’re close to home or offer great programs — they’re coming because they feel seen, supported, and excited about what’s ahead.”

The Class of 2029 is ready to ask tough questions, explore new ideas, and embody the Reformer spirit. From future nurses and business leaders to scientists and artists, they reflect PLU’s commitment to access, diversity, and excellence, and they’re prepared to make a lasting impact on campus and in our communities.
