DJS Assistants
Salary: Minimum hourly wage + Rieke Scholarship (for eligible students)
Hours: 8-10 hrs; Participate in fall training (Aug 31 – Sept 3) and New Student Orientation (Sept 4 – 6); hours may be flexible for project based work
DJS Assistants are key contributors to the education, mentorship, community building, activism and promotion of diversity, justice, and sustainability at PLU. DJS Assistants bring initiative and innovative ideas to raise and sustain general awareness and education on campus about issues related to culture, intersectional identity, belonging, social and environmental justice, and consent. DJS Assistants staff the DJS Lounge and design and facilitate opportunities for our campus to participate in community, advocacy, and critical curiosity.
Specifically, DJS Assistants will:
- Work as a team to support the management of the daily rhythm of the DJS Lounge which includes serving as a resource and peer mentor to a diverse group of students who visit the space.
- Facilitate DJS dialogue opportunities including weekly DJS Lounge Check Ins, Talk Story, and JTerm Book Group.
- Collaborate with cross campus groups to the planning, execution, and assessment of annual programs, campaigns and celebrations including On The Road, cultural celebrations, Earth & Diversity Week, Gender & Sexuality Week and DJS workshops and dialogues.
- Serve as a lead for one of the following:
- ASPLU – ASPLU is the representative voice of the student body at PLU. This DJS Assistant will serve as the Center for DJS Senator serving as the representative of the student communities part of the center. The person in this position must be able to attend biweekly ASPLU meetings on Tuesdays 5:30-7:30.
- Digital Communications – This DJS Assistant will coordinate the management of the department’s social media, newsletters, and website content. This includes coordinating posts and content from multiple contributors, creatively engaging audiences, and developing a departmental brand and online presence.
- Leadership Learning – This DJS Assistant will support and promote the DJS Coalition which includes, recruiting participants, designing and facilitating DJS leadership learning workshops, sharing written feedback to peer reflections, and coordinating celebrations for DJS Coalition milestones.
- Peer Education – This DJS Assistant will support the Active Bystander & Consent program that encourages Lutes to engage through a DJS values aligned lens. This includes collaborating with campus partners to design context specific presentations, facilitating ABC workshops on various topics, and designing digital and print educational materials.
Successful candidates will:
- Maintain full time enrollment at PLU for the 2025-2026 academic year
- 2.5 semester and cumulative GPA and good academic and disciplinary standing
- Commit to promoting diversity, justice, and sustainability in their communities at and outside of PLU
- Express curiosity and commitment in continuing their own DJS leadership learning
- Desire to be a peer mentor
- Experience or willing to learn project management
- Operates with a commitment to organization, punctuality, and communication
- Ability to build effective relationships with students, faculty, staff and community partners
DJS Assistants - Community Garden
Salary: Minimum hourly wage + Rieke Scholarship (for eligible students)
Hours: 8-10 hrs; Participate in fall training (Aug 31 – Sept 3) and New Student Orientation (Sept 4 – 6); hours may be flexible for project based work
2 Positions: Summer/Fall (June – October) & Full Year (June – May)
DJS Assistants are key contributors to the education, mentorship, community building, activism and promotion of diversity, justice, and sustainability at PLU. DJS Assistants bring initiative and innovative ideas to raise and sustain general awareness and education on campus about issues related to culture, intersectional identity, belonging, social and environmental justice, and consent. DJS Assistants for the Community Garden work during the summer and fall to coordinate the planting, harvesting, and community engagement within the PLU Community Garden.
Garden experience is not required for this position. Rather, we are seeking applicants who are willing to learn new skills, contribute creatively to the team, and expand their knowledge of ways community gardens can assist in facilitating connection with each other and the living environment.
DJS Assistants – Community Garden will:
- Work as a team to support the management of the garden through planting, harvesting, and watering
- Coordinate and facilitate regular volunteer community work parties that assist in garden maintenance and community connection and learning
- Assist with weekly food donations to our local food pantries
- Explore ways community gardens can assist in facilitating connection with each other and the living environment.
- During the academic year they will also support the management of the daily rhythm of the DJS Lounge which includes serving as a resource and peer mentor to a diverse group of students who visit the space.
- Participate in the DJS Coalition which includes monthly leadership development workshops and reflections
Successful candidates will:
- Be available to work June – October
- Maintain full time enrollment at PLU for the 2026-2027 academic year
- 2.5 semester and cumulative GPA and good academic and disciplinary standing
- Commit to promoting diversity, justice, and sustainability in their communities at and outside of PLU
- Express curiosity and commitment in continuing their own DJS leadership learning
