About:
The PLU Hispanic & Latino Studies program combines the study of the Spanish language with courses in Latin American, Latino, and Iberian literatures, linguistics, and cultural studies.
Whether Spanish is part of your heritage or you’re learning it as a second language, you’ll take on big questions about justice, migration, race, gender, sexuality, memory, and the politics of language — both in the past and today. The Hispanic & Latino Studies professors are well-known on campus for their genuine passion for teaching, active role as mentors, and advocacy for social change in the U.S. and abroad.
You’ll have opportunities to participate in study away programs in Mexico, Spain, Uruguay, and Puerto Rico, as well as community-engaged learning in Latino/a/x communities right here in Parkland and Tacoma. When you graduate, your degree will equip you with the cultural competency and sensitivity to be an effective participant in the global community of the twenty-first century.
Skills you'll gain from this program:
- Spanish Language Mastery — Build fluency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking Spanish through immersive courses and real-world practice.
- Cross-Cultural Competence and Understanding — Gain deep knowledge of Hispanic and Latinx communities in the U.S. and worldwide, expanding your global perspective.
- Social Justice Awareness — Examine inequality and learn both local and global strategies to challenge and change unjust systems.
- Critical and Creative Thinking — Sharpen your ability to analyze complex issues and express ideas clearly through writing, discussion, and research.
