Major Monday: PLU’s newest major – Music Therapy!
PLU becomes the only university in Washington that will offer an accredited path to becoming a licensed music therapist.
PLU just launched a Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy (the first students started in fall 2025)! This makes PLU the only university in Washington state that will have an accredited pathway to licensure in an important, growing field.
Music therapy combines art and science to support people’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Students in the new program will study psychology, neuroscience, and music performance while learning how to use music in clinical and community settings. You can do meaningful work, like helping kids communicate through rhythm or supporting veterans through songwriting.
“Music can reach places that words can’t,” says Dr. Megumi Azekawa, PLU’s new Director of Music Therapy. “That’s what makes this field so special — it connects people in ways that are deeply human.”
Dr. Azekawa brings experience working with neurodivergent children, veterans, and others through music. Students will gain hands-on experience through real-world clinical experience, internships, and opportunities to make connections through their art.
Here, music therapy is more than just a new major — it’s about using music to care for people and make a real difference in our communities.
