Thinking about cyber security as part of a computer science major? Computer Science professor, Dr. Laurie Murphy, shares insight about pursuing that path at PLU!

“The PLU computer science program doesn’t have a dedicated security concentration, but our curriculum provides a strong foundation in software development, algorithms, operating systems, and computer networks – all of which are excellent preparation for further study or work in the security field.

We do offer courses that touch on security-related topics, such as Computer Organization (CSCI 302), Operating Systems (CSCI 444), and Computer Networks (CSCI 386), and students have the flexibility to explore Cyber Security more deeply through their senior capstone project.

Several of our graduates have gone on to pursue security-focused graduate programs or careers.

If you’re thinking long-term, our program is a solid stepping stone toward graduate work in Cyber Security, where many of the specialized tools and techniques are explored in-depth.”
