You Ask, We Answer: How is playing a college varsity different from playing a high school varsity sport?

PLU student-athlete, Women’s Soccer
Playing an NCAA Division III varsity sport at PLU differs from playing a high school varsity sport immensely. From the level of athletic opportunity to the overall lifestyle shift, DIII athletics creates an environment that is rich in growth both on and off the field while still allowing you to stay focused on your academic goals.
I’m a varsity women’s soccer player at PLU, but I am so much more than that, too. I’m a double major, an athletics intern, the Co-President of PLU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council, and someone who’s made lifelong friends and incredible memories along the way. Being a student-athlete here opens up a network of people who want to support you: coaches, professors, teammates, and staff who all recognize that you are more than your sport.
The biggest difference from high school is the balance and intentionality. At PLU, you’re trusted to take ownership of your time, your success, and your experience. You’re challenged at a higher level athletically, but you’re equally encouraged to explore leadership roles, career opportunities, and academic passions. Because of that, you grow not only as an athlete, but as a whole person.
Playing DIII athletics at PLU has allowed me to pursue all the things I care about, not just soccer, and that’s what makes this experience truly unique.
