BSN pathway to the MSN

Pathway: The BSN to MSN Care and Outcomes degree allows students with a BSN degree to focus on care management and improving patient outcomes in a continually changing healthcare environment. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) The Future of Nursing:  Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011) report calls for more nurses with advanced education in order to meet the health care needs of the public.  MSN COM-prepared nurse is the ultimate “Care Manager” with skills in coordinating an interdisciplinary plan of care to guide patient progress toward achieving clinical, quality, and cost effective outcomes.

The core MSN curriculum prepares the student with the knowledge and skills required of all masters‐prepared nurses as determined by the AACN Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education (2021).

Three areas of role specialization are available:

  • Clinical Nurse Leader®
  • Clinical Nurse Educator

A limited cohort is admitted to the MSN COM program each year and admission is competitive.

Future possibilities: Students in their final year of the program are able to apply for the Post Master’s DNP program. If admitted, the DNP degree can be completed in another 2 years.
