Residential Life and the Pierce County Fire Marshall allow for the use of candles for religious purposes in residential rooms and common spaces as long as a fire extinguisher is readily available, the flame is away from flammable materials, and the lit candle is never left unattended.

To request approval for religious candle use, please email your Community Director with the following information:

  • Name and Room Number
  • In what ways the candle will be used
  • The days and times you plan on using the candle
  • A fire safety plan describing where the nearest fire extinguisher is, how you will protect the space from dripping wax, and any other precautions the use of the candle will need

No residential student is allowed to have candles in their room unless given written permission by a Community Director or the Assistant Director of Campus Life.
