Does this program meet requirements for licensure in my state? Each state and territory have different professional licensure and certification requirements. PLU teacher and principal certification programs, including add-on endorsements are approved by the Washington Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) and meet Washington state licensure requirements. Candidates who complete PLU’s state approved preparation programs for teachers and administrators will be recommended to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for licensure.

PLU works to confirm if programs meet the educational prerequisites for professional licensure or certification outside the state of Washington. Educators should be aware that each state has specific requirements that they may be required to complete for full licensure. Most often, this is specific testing but may include background checks, verification of experience, or completion of a specific course such as that state’s history. Since PLU’s programs are state approved, the state they are moving to will usually give the candidate 1-3 years to meet any outstanding requirements required by the new state. Candidates are encouraged to contact the appropriate state licensing agency to seek information and additional guidance before beginning the program.

Potential changes in requirements: Licensure information is reviewed and updated on this site in July of each year. Students who plan to pursue licensure outside of Washington state should be aware that state licensure requirements are subject to changes. While a program may originally meet the educational requirements for licensure, changes in requirements could impact the program’s ability to meet any new educational requirements. Students should always check with their state licensure board to confirm licensure requirements.

Important note for relocating during the course of a program: Prospective and current students should keep in mind that licensing and authorization requirements vary by state and that relocating during the course of a program to another state could impact whether that student can continue in the course, meet the eligibility requirements of that state, and/or receive financial aid funding. If students are considering relocating, they should contact their degree program to check for authorization and licensure eligibility requirements.

Special Note:

In general, taking a course for graduate level continuing education credits (through Partnerships and Professional Development – PPD) which appear on a PLU transcript can be used toward renewing or maintaining certificates both in WA and in other states. In general, professional development taken for Clock Hours can only be used in Washington state. Out-of-state teachers and administrators are advised to check the specific requirements in their state for certificate maintenance or renewal before registering for continuing education courses.  This applies to the summer add-on endorsement programs and other professional development courses (e.g. LE, TCL, College Board AP Courses, other institutes).
