T-Town Chamber Music Festival at Pacific Lutheran University

The T-Town Chamber Music Festival and Institute is excited to welcome you to this season’s concerts! The central mission of the T-Town Chamber Music Festival and Institute is simple and powerful: to uplift the music that speaks to audiences of all ages, experiences, and cultures, to invest in the next generation of committed young musicians and to foster their passion for bringing music to their communities. The experience of playing chamber music, hearing chamber music, and watching it performed by live musicians truly is for everyone and it is our sincere hope that you can join us this season, in some of the diverse settings Tacoma has to offer. From the beautiful Lagerquist Concert Hall on Pacific Lutheran University’s campus to exciting and intimate spaces such as the Happy Duo Cafe and the historic Tacoma Armory, the T-Town Festival and Institute brings together world-renowned musicians and passionate young artists to work side-by-side in a shared mission of music-making.
PERFORMANCES
The Festival will present FIVE world-class performances featuring collaborations between the artist-faculty and Institute young artists on the following dates: June 25, 27, 28, 30 and July 1.

2026 Faculty
Blaise Magniere is a highly acclaimed chamber musician, performing in venues including Wigmore Hall in London, Herculessaal in Munich, the Louvre Auditorium in Paris and the Schneider Series at Carnegie Hall. He is the first violinist of the Avalon String Quartet and the Richard O. Ryan Endowed Chair in Violin at Northern Illinois University.
Mikhail Shmidt was born in Moscow, Russia and began his musical education at the age of five. One of the highlights of Mikhail’s Russian career was collaborating with composer Alfred Schnittke. Since immigrating to the United States in 1989, Mikhail has established himself as a leading chamber musician and is a member of the Seattle Chamber Players.
Marie Wang has been in the Avalon String Quartet since its inception in 1995. As a member of this ensemble, she has captured top prizes at the Concert Artists Guild and the Munich ARD international competitions. Marie is a Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at Northern Illinois University.
Rose Hashimoto has performed with ensembles including A Far Cry, Shattered Glass Ensemble, the Thalia Quartet, the Aeolus Quartet, and the Argus Quartet. Rose earned a B.M. from Juilliard and a M.M. and Professional Studies Diploma from Mannes College.
Korine Fujiwara is a violinist, violist, composer and a founding member of Carpe Diem String Quartet. Her critically acclaimed music has been performed on four continents. Named one of Strings Magazine’s “25 Contemporary Composers to Watch,” critics praise her work as “sophisticated, accessible.” She holds degrees from Juilliard and Northwestern and is Professor of Viola at Hartt School of Music.
David Requiro has emerged as one of today’s finest American cellists. David has made concerto appearances with the National Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Tokyo Philharmonic and has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. He is currently Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Dr. Meta Weiss has established herself as one of the leading cellists of her generation. Her performances have taken her to venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Boston Symphony Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and Sydney Opera House. She is Chamber Music Coordinator at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Christina Dahl is a chamber musician, soloist and teacher who has been on the piano faculty at Stony Brook University for nearly 30 years, currently serving as the Music Department’s Chair. She can be heard on the Bridge, Albany and Tzadik labels and has twice been a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department.
Oksana Ejokina (Festival and Institute Artistic Director) appears frequently as guest recitalist and chamber musician on concert series across the United States. She is the pianist of the Volta Piano Trio, whose recordings on the Con Brio Label have been lauded in many international music journals. Oksana is Professor of Piano at PLU.
Emely Phelps enjoys a versatile career as a performer and teacher and has served as faculty at University of Georgia, Anchorage Chamber Music Festival, and the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program. Recent performance highlights include appearances with A Far Cry and the Cassatt Quartet and the start of her first solo album showcasing American piano music of the past century.
James Brown is the Chair of Vocal Studies at PLU where he directs the opera and oversees a large voice program. As Director of Opera at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA, Brown follows a three-year cycle of repertoire with his students that includes the early baroque, standard repertoire, and modern repertoire. James holds degrees in voice from Loyola University/New Orleans, The Juilliard School and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and served for three years as a Resident Artist at The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.
Soon Cho is an acclaimed by Opera News for her “potent” and “intense and incisive” stage presence and praised by the Cincinnati Post as “regal in bearing, with vocal endowments to match,” Soon Cho’s career spans Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. Dr. Cho serves as Professor of Music at PLU.
