Entrance Audition

BRASS

  • Standard sonata or concerto movement; OR
  • Standard solo etude; OR
  • Selection of standard orchestral excerpts

GUITAR (Classical Emphasis)

  • At least one major and minor scale, in two octaves;
  • Two contrasting movements of pieces from the solo repertoire (e.g., works by Sor, Carcassi, Tárrega, Villa-Lobos, Brouwer, or similar)

HARP

  • An etude (e.g., Pozzoli, Bochsa or LaRiviere), or similar study; OR
  • A section of the Level 2 or 3 warm up from On Playing the Harp by Yolanda Kondonassis;
  • A standard solo of student’s choice

JAZZ

  • Play a Jazz Standard (defined as a jazz composition, e.g. “Blue Monk”) or a piece from the Great American Songbook commonly used as a vehicle for jazz (e.g., “All of Me”) following the form described below:
    • HORNS
      • Play one chorus of melody, and one or two chorus(es) of improvised solo. We suggest that you use a play along audio file such as iReal Pro
    • PIANO AND GUITAR
      • Either unaccompanied jazz solo piece (including an improvised section); OR
      • Play one chorus of melody, one or two choruses of improvised solo, and one chorus of comping. We suggest that you use a play along audio file such as iReal Pro
    • BASS
      • Play one chorus of melody, an accompanying bass line for one chorus, then improvise for a chorus
    • DRUM SET
      • Demonstrate a few bars of different styles: swing, Latin (samba, bossa nova, Afro-Cuban 6/8), ballad (using brushes), and funk/rock styles
      • Brief solo in a style of choice

ORGAN

  • Two contrasting works from different periods and regions

PERCUSSION

  • Solos or etudes on at least two different instruments

PIANO

  • One Baroque or Classical work:
    1. One Baroque work (e.g., a movement from the Dance Suites, or a Prelude and Fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier by Bach); OR
    2. A movement from a Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven;
  • One Romantic or 20/21st-century work

SAXOPHONE

  • Sonata or concerto movement OR a selection of equivalent difficulty and substance (a solo etude is also acceptable)

STRINGS

  • At least one major and minor scale and arpeggio, in three octaves, with various bowings;
  • One solo work consisting of
    1. a movement of unaccompanied Bach; OR
    2. a movement from a standard concerto; OR
    3. two contrasting movements from a standard Sonata

VOICE

  • Two solo art songs (e.g., foreign language art song, or published English folk song) in any language

WOODWINDS

  • Sonata or concerto movement OR a selection of equivalent difficulty and substance (a solo etude is also acceptable)
